Chapter 20. To Be So Lonely

**✿❀○❀✿**

From beyond the hill, Dream watched as the staggering Wilbur disappear into the birch forest that hid their base from others. He didn't know how the President found their base but the thing that worried him deeply was what he witnessed.

He and Sapnap were supposed to return later in the afternoon but his bow broke and the younger hunter didn't want to lend him his extra one.

He was forced to come back earlier and he wished he took the longer route. He wished he walked slower or got distracted by anything because the sight that he witnessed broke his heart.

Dream knew of Matilda and Wilbur for a long time now and call him a stalker but he also knew how much the two cared for, with that said, he knew that it would not be that easy to get the two to act like strangers towards each other.

So, when he saw Wilbur crying in Matilda's arms, her wiping his tears away, and her smiling sadly as he walked away broke him.

He didn't want to think about it too much. He believed that the moment the two shared was real. That kiss sealed the deal. That Matilda felt the same way about him.

But that moment between the two former fiancés made him realize something, it didn't matter where they were or whom they loved, the two had a deep connection that no one will compare with.

It didn't matter that Matilda kissed him that night, or that she practically admitted that she loved him back. Once Wilbur comes back, she was willing to accept him with open arms. Wipe away his tears and comfort him.

Matilda Darling will always be there for Wilbur Soot no matter what happens. Despite all the pain and lies, she would be there for him just like how he would there for her.

And that broke Dream.

He had her and he will always have her now but it still hurt him knowing there will always be a piece of Matilda that will love Wilbur.

A love that Dream can never compare to.

A love that was so deep, no one can replace it.

A love that seemed impossible to compete with.

And that broke Dream more.
