Chapter 25. Half A Heart

Dream kept his eyes closed. The lingering feeling of her lips on him made the fuzzy feeling stay. But the warmth that was brought by her kiss was slowly leaving.
He let out a sigh as he felt her place the mask back on his face.
He finally opened his eyes to see Matilda smiling at him sadly. "Don't be sad now-" "I'm not." He cut her off.
She rolled her eyes and placed some ender eyes on his pockets. "Sure, you're not." She said sarcastically.
Dream snickered, "I'm not sad. I'm worried." This made her look at him with furrowed eyebrows, "Dream-" "I know. You think there's something wrong and I think there's something wrong." He grumbled.
He had to admit, planning with Wilbur about the destruction of L'Manberg, there was something off. It was as if the former President had finally lost it.
A few days after receiving the letter from her best friend, there was a twist in her stomach. Matilda felt as though there was something terribly wrong so when Dream said something about him zoning out in meetings she decided on agreeing on meeting with Wilbur.
She knew Dream didn't like it but she was determined. She felt as though there was something else with his letter. Like she would lose him permanently.
So, on the day of the festival, she left the base alongside Dream. They came to two different paths where they would have to separate.
And despite Dream's internal battle, he memorized the feeling of her arms around his waist, her lips on top of his, and the touch of her hands on his cheek.
"Please be safe Dream." She said as she sighed and pulled away. He hummed and kept his eyes closed, "You know I always am." He said.
Matilda huffed and tilted his head so he would look at her. He opened his eyes to see her looking at him, a raise of her eyebrow, and the pout on her lips.
"I'm not kidding." She said. He huffed but nodded, "I know you aren't. Don't worry about me. You have to go."
"And here I thought you would stop me from going to see him."
"I would. But he needs you."
"..."
"Darling-"
"I love you Dream."
"...I love you too..."
And as she walked away, Dream watched with a frown. He knew she loved him but he felt like there was something else going on and he felt like that maybe he should have held her closer and kissed her deeper, but it was too late.
The festival was about to start.
