Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the last bell of the day rang. students were quick to pack up and run out of the school.to no surprise, kurt, dave, gary, and jane were the last ones out of the classroom. dave would share awkward glances with jane as kurt would whisper to him. jane hated whatever the three of them had going on this class period. she found it ridiculous that the two boys just watched and stared from afar, making little to no effort to actually speak with her.
she slung her backpack over her shoulder, facing gary.
"hey," she started, "i gotta go run out and tell my ride that i'm hanging out with you after school. is it okay if i do that before we go?" she asked, trying to keep her voice low so the others didn't hear.gary threw his backpack on as he began leading the way out, "yeah, no problem. i'll wait for you in back of the school."
jane nodded at him as they reached the hallway, splitting their ways just as they walked out.
jane immediately heard fast footsteps behind her. she already assumed who was lurking behind.
"jane," one of the voices spoke. she turned and met the gaze of dave and kurt.
she slowed down to reach the duo's pace, "hey, creeps." she playfully answered, "what was with all the staring last class?"
"what was with you sitting with gary newman?" dave viciously blurted out. kurt nudged him.
she blinked rapidly, "excuse me?"
"what dave is trying to ask is," kurt budged in, "why didn't you just sit with us?"
jane did want to sit with kurt and dave, more than anything. but, she couldn't just ditch gary like that. not to mention, if krist knew she was befriending dave and kurt once again, she'd never hear the end of it. that's how she saw it.
"i dunno," she shrugged, "it's just, weird, i guess, to hangout with krist's friends." she thought back to krist's harsh words just from last month.
she saw the two look at each other. "is that what this whole thing has been about?" kurt quickly asked, "krist said something like that awhile ago during practice. is that-"
jane tensed up, "no!" she shot out, startling the others. she sighed, realizing they had just about made it to the doors that led to the parking lot.
she stopped in her tracks and faced the two, yet focusing on kurt mostly.
"it's complicated, alright?" she breathed, "it's my own personal thing." in a way, she didn't think she was lying. she felt it was a complicated and personal subject, considering her feelings for kurt that bubbled up every time he looked her way."jane, i really don't fucking get it-" kurt sounded pissed, yet confused, but jane was quick to quiet him.
"not right now, kurt." she hastily said, "later." she was trying to imply they'd talk about it when they would meet under the bridge. he caught on, but remained expressionless.
she looked at the two before turning around and exiting the building, rushing through the parking lot to find krist's car. luckily, he did park in the same spot and his car wasn't hard to spot.
she finally reached his car and opened the passenger door. "krist," she exclaimed, nearly out if breath from her power walking. she threw her backpack in the floorboard of his car.
"i'm hanging out with a friend after school." she informed, he looked puzzled.
"no 'hi', no 'how are you-"
"krist!" she interrupted, "is it cool if i go or not?"
he looked around the parking lot for a minute, looking as if he was scouting someone out.
"with kurt?" he asked. jane rolled her eyes, "no, dipshit. you guys have practice, why would he hangout with me?"
"when did i tell you we had practice?" he interrogated, squinting his eyes. jane mentally cursed herself, knowing damn well it was kurt who told her about the band's practice. she blinked, trying to think of an excuse.
"you told me this morning." she stated, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. her tone must've been convincing, considering how quick krist was to drop it. he only hummed in response.
"sure, whatever. be home before 9 or some shit." krist sighed in annoyance, "next time, i'm not driving all the way out here for nothing. wear your hiking boots tomorrow."
jane looked over to her right then back at krist, "sorry, may not be me, but, other people need your taxi service." she motioned at the two familiar bandmates who walked closer and closer to his car.
before krist could go and complain, jane slammed the door shut and sprinted off before she could confront all three of the men at once. kurt was the only one who let his eyes linger on her as she walked away.
—
jane made her way around the outside of the school and found gary at the back, just where he said he would be.
as he noticed her figure move around the corner and reach him, he smiled.
"hey, stranger." he greeted.
"hey, you." she responded.
"you ready?" jane was sick of hearing those words. she wasn't ever ready, especially for the future. she didn't know what the future held, it was terrifying, in a way.
yet, she didn't voice her thoughts whatsoever. she simply nodded and the two began their walk.
—
the walk wasn't too long, but was undeniably a little awkward. the two were still new to each other, not sure what they could talk about.
soon enough, they made it to gary's front door. he turned to face her.
"you can come in, if you want. i'm just gonna grab some stuff and we can go." he offered a small smile. jane gave him a questioning look, "where are we hanging out?"
"it's a spot a lot of people don't go to." he gave vague details, "don't sweat it. it'll be cool." he said before opening his door.
"i'll wait out here." she said. he nodded and walked in the house, shutting the door behind him.
jane sat herself on the stairs of gary's front porch. she sighed. it was undeniable she rather be at home, listening to kurt's voice boom from downstairs. she hated herself for the mix of emotions she gave kurt today. one class period, she laughed with him and had genuine fun. then, the last bell rings, and she practically gave him the cold shoulder.
it was unsettling, though, to see kurt get mad at her. the way his tone and facial expression shifted, it made her stomach turn. it was eerily similar to how her father's anger built up.
she shuddered at the thought of her father being angry. her thoughts branched out into remembering seattle and all she was put through. what had seemed to be a normal childhood was much more dark and sinister than she ever realized. she never fully understood how awful her life was back in seattle until she was thrown out of the house.
jane's rushing thoughts were put to an end as she heard a door closed. she whipped her head around to find gary, a different, even slightly smaller het very full, backpack on his back.
"you okay?" he asked as jane stood up and walked over to him. she nodded, "oh, yeah. i was just waiting on your slow ass." she teased. he playfully punched her shoulder, "real funny, asshole." he spoke with a smile.
the two rushed away from gary's house and began their walk once again.
