Fukase jumped at every slightest sound and briefly considered turning back. He couldn't now that he's come this far, and he couldn't just abandon Oliver like this.He wondered if Oliver even cared about him as much as Fukase cared about Oliver. He wondered if that was the reason Oliver was ghosting him in the first place. He wondered if this was all for nothing.
He felt something watching him. He slowed down to a stop, hoping that whatever it was would realize he wasn't a threat and leave him alone. He only felt the presence grow closer, but he was too paralyzed to do anything about it. It breathed on his neck, and he still didn't move.
If he moved, this thing would kill him, he was sure of it. He couldn't let himself go down, not now. Not until he got to see Oliver again.
Sweat trickled down his face, and time stood still as the sound of his own heartbeat rivaled that of the breathing. He was being ridiculous, he tried to tell himself. It was just an animal like a deer or a monkey, he tried to reason. He could hear Piko's voice telling him to get a grip, and Len's voice shouting support. He imagined his mom and his siblings. How sad they would all be if he didn't return home. He closed his eye as it filled with tears.
It finally backed off, and the presence disappeared entirely. A breath escaped him like a steam engine as he gasped for air. He sat back and cried.
He wasn't strong enough for this. He wasn't good enough for Oliver. He just had to face the facts. Oliver didn't like him, at the very least, not anymore. He wasn't good enough. His hand found Point in his pocket, and he locked his fingers around her soft body. His hands were slick with sweat, but he couldn't care about that now. He just needed Point.
He heard Flower in his head. He couldn't give up like this. He couldn't be a pathetic loser in this moment. He had to be brave, he had to be strong. He just wanted to see Oliver again. That's all he wanted.
He set Point down on his lap and wheeled forward. The further he went, the darker it grew, but he wasn't afraid anymore. At least, that's what he tried to tell himself.
"You've got a lot of false confidence for someone who was crying just a few minutes ago." A familiar, yet distorted voice rang out around him.
Fukase turned his head every which way, searching for where it came from. "You don't scare me, whatever you are!" His shaking voice betrayed him.
The voice didn't respond, and Fukase wondered if this was just some elaborate prank Oliver was pulling. That voice sounded strangely like Oliver, right? Or did he imagine it? Were this woods making him go insane?
"Do I scare you?" A voice chirped from right on his blind side, and he screamed, grabbing his cane and swinging it right at them. Something thudded to the ground.
"You won't stop me! I'll see Oliver whether you want me to or not!"
"What?"
He realized who the voice belonged to, and he swung his head around to see Oliver's sister, Ruby, on the floor, except she didn't look like Ruby. Where her ears were, there were feathers. Where her legs were, there were bird talons. Large red and green wings were sprouted from her shoulder blades, and tail feathers of the same colors jutted from her lower back. Her eyes, instead of their normal green, were a deep red.
His jaw dropped, and she stared at him.
She sat up. "Okay kid, this isn't really a good time to be looking for Oliver. I'll take you back home. I don't even know how you got here in the first pl-" She started to stand, and Fukase snapped back into reality, backing away and holding his cane out in front of him like a weapon.
