juniper
set: two months after their son was born

i rolled over, and i buried my face into my pillow with a groan as i was woken up to atlas crying. i shut my eyes and tried to block it out, but it was no use.

"mommy, make him shut up," rue whined sleepily as she tugged on my shirt sleeve.

they're both awake... great.

"get him, junie," billie mumbled.

i turned to see that billie was laying on her back. both of her eyes were closed as she rubbed at them and yawned.

when i didn't immediately get up, billie turned to look at me with slightly narrowed eyes. "june."

"okay, okay," i muttered. i slowly sat up, yawning and stretching as i did. i turned to look at the alarm on my nightstand. i internally groaned as i saw that it was past two-thirty in the morning.

i walked to atlas's crib, and i bent down to gently pick him up. he was still screaming crying. immediately, i closed my eyes, and i took in a sharp inhale.

"bil... he needs his diaper changed," i told her.

"it's your turn to change it."

my brows furrowed as i stared at her. she had sat up, and she was leaning against the headboard as she still rubbed at her face. "no, it's your—"

"i changed him before we went to bed," she cut me off. "it's your turn."

i sighed. i brought him out of the bedroom and to his changing table. i carefully laid him down. i changed his diaper, then put a new, clean onesie on him. i swaddled him again, and then cradled him to my chest. he was still crying.

"what's the matter, baby boy?" i asked in a soft murmur as i tried to calm him down. still, he continued to cry.

i brought him back to mine and billie's bedroom. i started to bring him over to billie, so that she could breastfeed him, but i stopped for a second as i saw billie was soothingly rubbing rue's back as she cried.

i walked over to billie's side of the bed so that i could hand her atlas. i then got in on my side, and i cupped rue's face as i wiped her tears. "hey, calm down. it's okay," i murmured with slightly furrowed brows. "why are you crying, angel?"

"he's so loud. i c-can't sleep," she sniffled as her body continued to shake with her cries. "i'm s-so sleepy, mommy."

i frowned. "i know, baby. look, he's quiet now," i said as billie started to breastfeed atlas, which quieted him down. "you wanna try and go back to sleep?"

she pouted as she gave a pitiful nod. "mhm," she hummed with a slight whine.

"c'mere," i murmured as i laid down. she immediately opted to lay on top of me and bury her face into my neck. i placed my hand on her back, and i soothingly rubbed it. it took her no time at all to fall back asleep.

"who knew having a toddler and a new born would be such a handful?" i asked in a teasing, sarcastic tone.

"mhm," billie hummed.
