These are The Artists That Made Me

In the name of poetry,
There couldn't be more unrecognized talent
A lot of things said but not heard
But these are the voices
That stole my attention and
As I sit here and join them today
I would like to introduce them myself
A big start but never enough recognition
She's Ntozake Shange
A living and breathing writer for the masses
Her stanzas float right off the page
Because there just so damn slick
But she can't help it, her art
Is just as real as she is
Next, the one and only
Tupac Shakur, a bull-blazer
Of fire and hip hop
He had sense, just enough to
Make you want to listen and hear
What the brothers' got to say
He knew he was gifted and the
The best thing he done, was share it
With the world
I'm sure we all know who this next one is
And if you don't, you got some learning to do
Maya Angelou
First discovered her as a freedom writer
But then came to love her,
For the truthful words she spoke
Her wisdom, I would like to think
Made me the young woman
I try to be everyday
But I'm only a fraction, if that
To what she naturally was
Her superpower was being able to
Be a voice for her people or anyone
Who believed in what was right
Me being who I am, and having the mother I do
I was one of those people
Lucky enough to read their work
It transformed me to want
To be a better, more intentional writer
Having no shame in my words
That are purposefully chosen,
To get my point across
And hopefully will be remembered
It's an honor to say I've been influenced
By ones like no other
I am here today
Seeing who I'm gonna be tomorrow
Because just like them
I will be one of the greats

*This poem meant a lot to me because I am letting you guys in. Hopefully after you read this poem, my work starts to make more sense. I missed a couple people in this poem. Like Nikki Giovanni, Audre Lord (love herrrrr) and Ava Duvernay. I know she's not a poet but she is a writer. Her movies really give me a sense of confidence and that I'm meant to be here, doing what I love. And these are all black women of course. Gotta show love to the blueprint. 👏🏾
