Monday, the 19th of January

Monday was spent in high spirits, in a daze, in longing, in missing.

Both Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng went to work that day, but their heads were full of their night, and their love-making.

It was the first day of Brent's work week too, so his first task was to get to Lan Huan's place and get his car. His other car.

Fairly amused, the young man met Mister Lan Xichen for a quick lunch in a restaurant nearby the law firm's office, so that he could give him a set of spare keys, and explain things to him. He sat, unblinking, and listening to the lawyer carefully, wondering whether all of his work was going to be as easy as this. He knew quite well that most of the life threats  rich people claimed were real, in reality only lived inside their paranoid brains. He was pleased; he could not imagine an easier source of capital.

- I hope you are a night owl, dear boy.

Lan Xichen really insisted on calling him "a boy",  despite the fact that they only had a couple of years' difference in age. If Brent was annoyed by this, he never showed it.

He nodded, distracted, rather observing with inner amazement the way the man opposite him was ordering (and then demolishing)  large quantities of food.

- Some part of your job would be to drive us home late at night, and it's a nice thing that both me and Wanyin work so close by. We sometimes spend the night at his place, but it was mostly because of the inconvenient trips for me and my pretty baby!

The young blonde allowed himself a slight raising of the left eye-brow.

- My Porsche.  –  Lan Huan explained, amused himself.  –  Anyway! Now that we have you,  we can spend the nights at my place!  Will you be OK with living with us for a month? My house is big enough.

Brent considered the proposition for a split second.

He would never admit it to a living soul on the planet, ever, but he had watched that fateful morning show on the 5th too; actually, the show's ending  had been his major doubt before accepting the job. It had been Katherine's passionate ode of praise for her boss that changed his mind, and his best friend's absolute love and trust in his baby sister.

His own place was small. He basically had a bedroom, a small kitchen, an even smaller bathroom, and a spare room for training indoors, whenever he wasn't jogging or running in the nearby park. The TV program had shown a luxurious home, and he wasn't too sure how he felt about it. He rather imagined his job as being someone's driver and occasional companion  –  for protection.

He pressed his thin lips together and spoke calmly:

- Sure. I'll pack a bag.

Lan Xichen waved a fork in the air, thinking out loud:

- As you wish. I will try to go to the bank and get some cash for you, or if you prefer  –  I'd transfer some funds onto a bank account?  –  he smirked.  –  But as far as I understand...

He leaned over the table and stared at the cold face with interest now.

Yes, yes. He saw it too now. The way Wanyin was worried, jealous. This young boy really bore resemblance to his ex. Amazing.
