It was inevitable. The playful banter, the constant teasing, the unbreakable eye contact. All of it led to one thought that Wednesday couldn't shake off: Dahlia. It would be amusing if it weren't so nauseating.
Since their night together, Wednesday hadn't contacted Dahlia. She wouldn't even budge, even if it meant sacrificing her favorite PJ set. In her mind, she couldn't be bothered with anyone's company. She had made an unsettling discovery following the monster's attack and the sheriff's incapability to capture it. But the true intent and reason may be completely different.
Perhaps it was Xavier and Dahlia's blossoming romance that only existed in her mind. Or maybe it was the fact that Dahlia hadn't tried to contact her either. Or maybe it was something more.
Wednesday couldn't help but wonder what was going on in Dahlia's mind. Was she thinking about her too? The uncertainty was driving her crazy.
Despite her inner turmoil, Wednesday remained composed on the outside. She had a reputation to uphold, after all.
As Wednesday examined the drawing of herself that Rowan had dropped, her mind began to make loose connections between recent events and her feelings towards Dahlia. And then it hit her like a ton of bricks - she was in love with her.
She let out a heavy sigh and placed her head in her hands. This was not the revelation she had hoped for. She knew she needed to do something about it, and fast.
Without hesitation, she grabbed her backpack and rushed out of the room. But as she made her way down the hall, she was suddenly met with Enid dragging Dahlia into the room, giggling like little kids. Wednesday's eyes widened and her stomach did a flip.
'Hi, dear,' Dahlia greeted her with a smile, leaning down to meet her eyes. Wednesday felt her face flush with heat, though she tried to hide it.
:Dahlia, I need to have a word with you,' she blurted out before thinking twice about it. Dahlia looked slightly worried, unsure of what was coming next.
It was time for Wednesday to confront her feelings and take action. She couldn't keep them bottled up any longer.
' Of course, Enid. Just for a moment, please.' Enid nodded and left, humming a cheerful tune that made Wednesday's ears figuratively drip.
Wednesday found herself in a mess of emotions and anxiety, which she only became aware of after Dahlia shut the door and sat on her bed. She felt rooted to the floor, her eyes fixated on Dahlia's face, admiring her features and makeup. Dahlia stared back, propping herself up on the bed with her hands.
'What do you want, Wednesday?' Dahlia asked. 'After not speaking to me for almost a week, you suddenly need to talk. Explain yourself.'
Wednesday struggled to find the right words. She opened her mouth, then closed it, searching for an explanation that would at least appear rational. Dahlia bit the inside of her cheek, her fingers playing with her fishnets.
' I've been dealing with something that's been bugging me for a while now,' Wednesday said, trying to keep things vague.
Dahlia wasn't satisfied. 'You had time for other people, though. Your schedule would have managed just fine if you really wanted to talk to me.'
Wednesday sighed. 'Truthfully, I've been avoiding you for a completely different reason, which I only realized just now.'
Dahlia raised an eyebrow in curiosity. 'Which is?'
Their chests were barely touching now as Dahlia stepped towards her, and Wednesday braced herself.
'I am deeply infatuated with you. It's almost dreadful how you manage to be the first thought on my mind in the morning and the last before I go to sleep. Most of the time, I want to murder you for burdening me with such thoughts and derailing me from my sorrowful life.'
As Dahlia's stern expression shifted from confusion to realization, and perhaps even reciprocation, Wednesday felt her heart skip a beat. She swore to herself that she stopped breathing when Dahlia's hands cupped her cheeks, bringing their faces so close that their noses were touching. She blinked, her eyes fluttering closed for a second, until Dahlia slightly pulled away.
'I can't pretend I'm not in love with you, cara mia,' Dahlia whispered, her soft lips meeting Wednesday's in the next second.
Wednesday was sure that she was experiencing euphoria at that moment. Everything was so perfect that she felt tortured by it. Dahlia was soft, tender, and it felt so nice that she couldn't help but place her hands on her waist, pulling her closer and kissing back with a passion she didn't know she possessed. It was like when she was torturing those kids for her brother, but infinitely times better.
After a few minutes, Dahlia slightly pulled away, still holding Wednesday's face in her palms and staring lovingly into her brown eyes. She smiled slightly, pecked her nose, then pulled away, wary of Wednesday's aversion to physical touch.
Wednesday was at a loss for words again. She stared into Dahlia's eyes, a tiny smile making its way onto her face.
'May I come in now?' Enid's voice reverberated through the walls, causing Dahlia to chuckle. She gazed into Wednesday's eyes, smiling.
'My dear, it seems that I am tasked with taking you out now.'
Wednesday replied, 'Yes, it appears so. But what about Xavier?'
Dahlia responded, 'We went out once. I wouldn't exactly call that a committed relationship, you know.'
Wednesday's confusion cleared up as she picked up on the signs that had been there all along, indicating Dahlia's reciprocation of her feelings. She sighed.
'Seriously, guys, I can hear everything. You might as well let me in,' Enid sounded more annoyed this time.
Dahlia said, 'Friday at 7 pm, my room. Don't be late,' before opening the door and heading to her room. Wednesday's smile faded slightly.
Enid entered the room, exclaiming, 'Oh my gosh, Wednesday, tell me everything! You two are so cute, I swear!'
And with that, the smile was gone.
