What is love?

Ruby used to think it was a question nobody could really answer. People argued about it all the time, whether it was real, made-up, chemical, temporary. Whether it existed at all.

People liked pretending it was complicated.

Ruby always thought they were missing the point.

Love was real. She knew because she'd had it, the kind that wasn't loud or showy, but steady. Solid. Something that settled into her chest and stayed there, even now.

She'd loved Billy in a way she hadn't known was possible. Not the dramatic, whirlwind kind people wrote about, but the kind that made everything in her life feel like it finally made sense. The kind that made her want things she never put much thought into before, a future, a home, a life that wasn't exhausting or unstable or temporary.

He made her want things she didn't even know she wanted.

She had pictured it more times than she liked to admit. Not the perfect white-picket-fence daydream, not some movie version of a life, just something normal. Quiet. A place to land. A place where mornings weren't an argument and nights didn't feel like survival.

With Billy, that kind of future seemed possible. Easy, even.

She imagined the two of them somewhere warm, or maybe somewhere with seasons, they never decided. A small neighborhood, nothing fancy. Doors always open to the people they cared about. Kids running in and out, laughter echoing across backyards. Not perfect, but theirs.

She imagined coming home after long days, kicking off shoes, talking about nothing and everything. They were good at that, talking. It took them a while to get there. But then they were.

The truth was simpler than the fantasy:
she just wanted a life with him. Any life, as long as it was with him.

And Billy... he wanted that too. Maybe even more than she did. He talked about the future with a kind of hunger, like the idea of something stable was almost too big to believe in, but he wanted it anyway. Needed it.

One night, long after midnight, he'd told her he never thought about having kids until her. His voice had been quiet, almost unsure. Like he was admitting something fragile.

She remembered that night with painful clarity.

The music comes to her first.

Elvis, low and warm, drifting from the record player on her dresser. One of those songs that always sounded like velvet and longing, like something meant to be played in dim light.

And the room was dim, she remembers that too. The lamp on her nightstand cast everything in gold, soft at the edges. It brushed over her books, the ribbons she never bothered to put away, the little framed sketch of the Paris skyline she'd had since she was twelve.
