Ruby came to slowly.
Not the way people wake from sleep. There was no surface to rise from, no fog to peel back layer by layer.
Awareness didn't return so much as switch on, abrupt and unmistakable, like a light flicked behind her eyes.
She breathed.
That was the first thing she noticed.
Air moved into her lungs. Air moved back out again.
That was wrong.
The last thing she remembered was absence. Of air. Of movement.
Of everything.
Her body had gone quiet in a way that felt wrong, like something essential had been turned off without permission.
She remembered Max's arms around her, the sound of her voice breaking, the way her lungs had refused to work no matter how hard she tried.
Not burning.

Her body still felt far away, not numb, not present, like it existed somewhere else entirely. Like she was aware of it only in theory, the way you know a room exists behind a closed door without being able to enter it.
She looked down.
Her feet were planted firmly on the ground.
Grass brushed her bare ankles, cool and alive beneath her skin.
That shouldn't have been possible.
The ground was solid, springy, uneven in the natural way of earth that hadn't been trampled flat.
Not the slick, pulsing floor of Vecna's mind. Not the warped, bleeding imitation of the Creel house he liked to drag her into.
This was... peaceful.
That scared her more than anything else.
Ruby lifted her head slowly.
She stood in the middle of a wide meadow, grass stretching out in all directions, tall enough to ripple when a breeze moved through it. Wildflowers dotted the field, yellow, white, small bursts of color that felt almost deliberate in their normalcy.
