The door shut behind her with a dull, final sound.

Ruby stayed there, her palm pressed flat against the cool metal, as if the RV might lurch forward without warning, as if this thin wall were the only thing keeping the moment from breaking loose and scattering.

Outside, the forest murmured, metal clinking softly, low voices overlapping, a laugh cracking too sharp through the quiet. The world moving on its axis while something inside her begged to stay suspended.

She turned toward the back of the vehicle.

It wasn't a room. Just a narrow stretch of space where the bench seat hugged the wall, half-shadowed, half-forgotten. A curtain hung slack to one side, more suggestion than barrier.

It smelled like dust and fabric softener that wasn't hers, a faint, domestic cleanliness that felt almost intrusive. A stranger's life packed into corners and compartments. Borrowed space. Borrowed time.

Ruby reached up and opened one of the overhead cabinets.

Inside, clothes were folded tight and careful, denim, flannel, cotton worn thin and gentle with years of use. Evidence of mornings she hadn't lived. Of a future that belonged to someone else. She brushed her fingers over the stack, slow, reverent, until she pulled free a white t-shirt.

It weighed almost nothing in her hands. Light as air. Familiar in the way old things always were, the kind of shirt you forget you own until it's the only thing that still feels right. She held it there, unmoving, like if she let go, something else might come loose with it.

Her mind betrayed her anyway.

Max's arms around her waist, clinging like gravity itself, tight, desperate, as if holding on hard enough could keep Ruby from slipping through her fingers. Robin's voice outside, doubt sharpened into a shield. Nancy's sharp focus, already cutting the world into tasks and survival. Steve's steadiness, constant, grounding, the thing she leaned on without ever admitting she was leaning.

All of them orbiting something fragile and unnamed.

All of them careful not to look straight at it.

Billy was there too.

Not as a picture. Not as a face. As a weight in her chest.

As memory. As absence. As the first person who ever taught her that loving someone could carve pieces out of you, and that you could keep going anyway.

The thought came uninvited, quiet and merciless:

They're preparing to survive you.

Her breath caught.
