My blood runs cold. "Are you serious?"
"I am sorry Violet, everyone has been searching, but it is like he has disappeared."
"What!?" I cannot get much out other than this. Of course, he has. Where is everyone disappearing off to? And another thought pops into my head. What if he has taken Emmett?
"They have not stopped searching though, are you certain this happened?"
"Yes! Of course, I am. Do you not believe me?"
Arietta shifts uncomfortably on the spot, averting my eyes. A small ray of sunlight shines through a slit from the window, capturing the top of her forehead.
"No, I do, I just-" she sighs, "I do not know, you claim it was only you and him there. And if there were no other witnesses, well...I think others are going to find it hard to believe."
Something breaks inside my heart. "You can tell me that you do not believe me you know." She stares at me. "I..." she trails off.
"You came to me a couple of days ago and told me about the rumours going around. Could this be related do you think?" I inquire.
Arietta shakes her head in confusion. I nod, in absolute confusion and disappointment myself.
"It is fine," I reply, giving up, "if he is gone, good. If he comes back, I guess I will let someone know."
As soon as the door shuts, I scowl. I thought she believed me. Wishing that there were witnesses, I just stand by the door waiting a while, tapping my foot.
If I was her, I would be sceptical too, right? My thoughts try to fight back. I cannot blame her because she was not there. Either way, I try to let it go.
A dull and empty ache soon emerges from my stomach, I need to eat something. I do not want to, but I am going to because I know my body needs it.
I make my way down to the dining hall, making sure to be surrounded by at least a couple of people at all times.
What is happening? I just want Emmett and I to go home.
My eyes automatically glance to the back, and my heart jolts when I see who is sitting there.
Emmett.
I do not know if I am angry or glad to see him, but I pace up to his side. His head is resting in his hands, elbows planted on the table. He does not look up when I arrive next to him.
For a moment I just stand there, catching my breath. "Emmett?"
A few seconds pass until he takes a large breath, slowly tilting his head back to lift his eyes to mine. His hair sticks out and his shirt is crinkled. He looks terrible.
Something is wrong.
Emmett's eyelids drop over his eyes heavily, and once spotting me, the corners of his mouth curl up into a smile, but his eyes stay the same.
"Hey, Violet." He says my name like there is a secret meaning behind it. Technically there is, but it is like he is making fun of it.
"Where have you been the last day?" I cautiously question him, knowing full well that something is amiss.
Emmett pauses for a second, scrunches his mouth up and tilts his head back even further in thought. I have not seen him like this before. I smell a sour scent.
His fingers curl around a cup on the table, and at the exact moment I see it, I smell it.
I snatch the cup from Emmett's weak grasp.
