"A thousand times we die in one life. We crumble, break and tear apart until the layers of illusion are burned away and all that is left, is the truth of who and what we really are."

-Teal Scott

Madeline's P.O.V

"How are you feeling cupcake?" A boy asked, standing up from his seat as he brushed off the imaginary dust from his jeans.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and shifted back in the bed away from him, letting my hands hover over the assistance button. He proceeded to step forward again and that's when I slammed my fist against the device, climbing out of the bed and towards the door.

"Who the hell are you?"

"Madeline, stop playing mind games,"The boy breathed. "I was worried sick about you and I just wanted to know if-"

"Who are you and how do you know my name?" I snapped.

I quickly reached for the nearby rail for support and placed my hand over my heart that was beating abnormally fast.

It was thumping and thrashing too fast.

He clenched his jaw and took deep breaths, taking a step back to lean against the wall. He bit down on his lip and closed his eyes, reopening them back again.

They were no longer the ocean shade of blue, but instead, a deep and dark shade of grey that made him look ten times more scarier.

"What is this? The first day of kindergartin where we introduce ourselves all over again?" He snapped. "I understand that you don't want to see me right now, but the least you can do is show some sort of gratitude to the person who saved your life."

I shook my head and slowly lowered myself towards the ground and rubbed the temple of my nose,"What are you talking about? I don't even know who you are!"

The nurse rushed in at the peak of my voice's interval and hurriedly tucked me back into bed, typing rapidly against the set of computers that were placed strategically in the corner of the room. "I need you to leave now sir. Her scans are all coming back negative and she's in a critical condition. She's lucky that she even woke up from that coma."

The boy refused to cooperate and ignored the nurse's instructions, rushing by my side while shoving aside all the lingering wires.

"I can't. . .there's no guarantee that I'll be able to see her again," He whispered. "I don't want to make the same mistake all over again."

He fixed an intense stare-down and reached for my hand that was taped and battered with wires that were connected to the nearby complex machine. His lips parted and it almost seemed as if he was at a lost for words, for the first time since I first met him moments ago.

"What's the last thing that you remember?"

I played with the stray strands of my hair and looked away, letting my eyes land on anything, anything but his stormy grey orbs,"The last thing that I can recall was that dream. The dream where my mother said she would see me soon and that everything would be alright."

The nurse stopped typing and turned around in her chair, gesturing towards the boy who was by my side,"Do you remember this young man?"

I shook my head sadly and finally felt at peace when everyone's stares started to die down,"I don't."

She turned to the boy and gave him a weary smile while she rubbed his back soothingly,"Mr. Tyler? Maybe that's a sign."

The boy continually swallowed large gulps, looking at me briefly with pain and hurt clear in his eyes,"A sign of what possibly?"
