Chapter Two - Memories
I couldn't think straight. What was wrong with me? Was I seriously about to leave a complete, not to mention a crazy sounding, stranger in my home, alone? I took a deep a breath and readied myself to leave my apartment.
We quietly said goodbye to each other after I kissed Midnight and picked up my car keys.
As I got into my car I was trying to look normal, but I couldn't help from looking around me all paranoid. On the drive to the café I kept looking back in the rear-view mirror to see if I was being followed, and I began to feel really stupid. I started to think if I was actually stupid since I left a complete stranger back at my place.
"You're twenty minutes late," Abner called gruffly from the kitchen.
"I'm so sorry, Abner. You know how my old car is. I had to give it time to warm up before it would stay cranked long enough for me to pull out of my parking spot." I lied on the spot.
"Uh-huh," he mumbled a little disgruntled at my tardiness.
The breakfast 'rush' was a little slow when I arrived, and I was happy for that. My neck still hurt from falling asleep in the recliner and my mind was still on Ian, thinking of what he was doing, all alone, in my apartment. One lady I was waiting on had to repeat her order to me three times before I understood what she was even saying.
"What's with you today, Macy?" Abner asked as I dropped some dishes in the sink noisily.
"I didn't sleep very well last night, and I got a crick in my neck," I rubbed my neck again. That, at least, wasn't a lie.
Two men wearing black suits walked in the door as I was still rubbing my neck. I slowly lowered my hand and picked up my note pad and pen. I knew these two were not the regular customers we usually got, but I couldn't let them know I knew that. I moved towards the counter, trying not to let my nerves show.
I greeted them as they approached the counter, "Good morning gentlemen. What can I get you this morning?" I smiled. My heart was doing all sorts of crazy flip-flops inside my chest.
"Nothing ma'am; we are with the FFA, investigating the plane crash near here and would like to ask you some questions," the tallest one announced all business like.
Somehow, I knew these two were not from the FFA. I figured they had to be FBI, CIA, or Homeland Security, but definitely not the FFA.
"Alright then, what brings you all the way over here? Aren't you supposed to investigate the scene?" Why did I say that? I was ready to smack my forehead right here in front of them.
They ignored my question.
"Were you working yesterday afternoon?" the shorter, hefty one asked. He wasn't portly but you could tell he wasn't fit either. He had one of those large bulgy noses too.
"Yes," I tilted my head while looking at them, pretending to be confused.
"Did a small group of four, all wearing military uniforms, come in here yesterday?" That short one was already beginning to get on my nerves.
I knew if I played dumb and say I didn't remember, they would suspect something, but I also didn't know how to say yes to them. "Yea, there was a small group of Army guys. They came in right before my shift ended."
"Was one of them a woman?" the taller man asked; his hair combed and slicked to the right.
"Sure was," I answered nonchalant.
"Did you see them leave?" the short bulky man asked with a stern edge to his tone.
I looked to the short one and tried not to sneer at him. "Nope, I left before they had started on their meal." I made my tone sound flippantly.
