It was common knowledge.
Everyone knew how close you are Hirosa were, in fact, you had been friends since you were children, from a chance encounter, a turn of fate, perhaps.
Unforntunately Hirosa fell ill, and eventually was unable to venture out of her hospital room. However, throughout all of this, you were by her side, even when her father could not be.
~
It came to the point in the year where 花見 fell. The cherry blossom viewing, when you would gaze at the pink scattered flowers with Hirosa. This was the first year you chouldn't, and despite that devasting realization, you had hope.
Taking a step into Hirosa's room after brief irregular knocks on the door, you then waved at the girl slowly. She took a moment to compose herself before looking over at you contently, her hair covering her face, making it look as though she had been asleep the entire day.
"Good evening, [NAME]." She said quietly, in her usual soft tone, her voice lingering for a moment, before she finally stopped and offered you another soft smile. You simply waved, the impending darkness of the situation hitting you, prompting you to remember that she would probably not live to another spring.
To the contary, however, you continued to speak, your pitch varied, as a coping mechanism to fight tears.
"Good evening Hirosa," You said- although it came out as more of a whisper.
And at that moment, it became strikingly obvious that you were acting softer because you felt as though Hirosa might break. Like she was a frail doll.
Regardless, you continued in your mellow voice.
"I've brought you a singular cherry blossom flower, I thought you might like it, as this one is the most beautiful one I was able to find." You finished, your eyes glistening with tears, before you handed her the flower, watching her face light up with bliss, before she replied.
"Oh, [NAME], it is simply so kind of you to do something like this.. you're my only visitor now that my father has gone away.." She sighed, the happiness in her voice fading as soon as she reached the last part of her sentence, causing you to quietly shift in your spot, as you placed a hand on her shoulder.
"It'll be alright, Hirosa. I'm sure there is some beauty to this situation and that he will return by moonrise." You assured her, even though you, yourself, struggled to believe this statement. She offered another smile in return, avoiding eye contact for a brief moment.
"Speaking of the time," She replied, "It seems that the sun is fading for today. Night will fall soon, you best return home before the darkness prevails." She warned, a light caution in her voice. Nethertheless, you nodded, readjusting your kimono, and walking towards the door.
"Wait, [NAME]."
You turned around to face her, the sunset illuminating her face, which you admired for a second, before linking eye contact, her eyes looked tired and glazed, a light red puffiness to the edges, as though she had been crying just moments before your visit.
"I love you." She spoke, quicking avoiding your gaze, before sniffling and averting her eyes back to yours. Your eyes widened for a moment, like you were taking in the truth of the moment, as you rushed over to her.
"I love you too. " You said, your tone soft and delicate, and just as she heard your words, she leaned in for a gentle kiss.
Of course.
You kissed her back, living in the moment, before pulling away, and the two of you exchanging grins.
"I might not live another day, but I want to spend the rest of my time with you when time permits so. Please come back tommorow." She said, still catching her breath.
You nodded and finally went to leave, waving again, and continuing to beam.
"Farewell, my love."
~
You met her again the next morning, but however;
Three days later, when you were supposed to meet her again, all that was left in the room as a butterfly, a pool of blood, and..
A singular, beautiful cherry blossom all alone.
