CHAPTER FIVE: THE LIGHT BEHIND YOUR EYES
POV: PRIVATE EMBER CARTER OF SQUIRE
The next morning, I woke up in my bunk and sighed happily at the memory of the night before. Aaron and I spent the rest of the night together. Most of the night at the bridge. We laid on the bridge staring at the sky and talking, or just staying silent and staring at each other. The more I thought about it, the more it was about me and Aaron. Him a Squire- Me a Rebel. The bridge is our relationship. A single small bridge across an ocean of war.
"Come on, Carter." One of the girls in my unit yelled. I got up and got dressed quickly in my bland uniform. As I walked to breakfast, a long limb was slung across my shoulders.
"Private Carter!" Austin exclaimed, a wide grin across his face. "Where did you and Corporal Pauley disappear to last night?" He teased, raising his eyebrows up and down.
I took a deep breath. "Sergeant Carlile, I gave the Corporal my virginity." I joked. Austin stopped dead in his tracks.
"Are you serious?" His eyes were as wide as bowling balls.
"No!" I yelled, laughing.
"Not funny, Private. You almost gave me a heart attack! I've got a bad heart, you know!" He reminded me.
"Really, Sergeant? That's cold. I am too funny!" We got to the mess hall alive and heart attack free. Then I was called to the commander's office. That was never a good sign. I walked, thinking that I could have been discovered or worse.
"Private Carter." I said as I approached the secretary. She pointed to a door. I thanked her and walked in. "Coman- ALAN!!" I screamed at the sight of my best friend. I was shocked. He wasn't to be there.
"Emmy!" He hugged me tight. "You look terrible in that uniform!" He whispered in my ear.
Squires wore khaki old military style uniforms, while Rebels wore black pants, long sleeved shirts, our awesome belts, and black boots. Alan wasn't wearing that though. Instead, he was decked out in a plain t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers.
"Private Carter, I'll leave you to talk to your brother." The Commander said, then left us.
"Brother?" I asked Alan. He shrugged. "So what do you need?"
"Paige needs you back. Our defense is crap and you're our best." He looked down. "She wants a hostage, too." I felt my throat constrict. Tears welled in my eyes.
"Oh, Alan." I cried. He hugged me. "I can't. I-I've fallen in love." I confessed. He rubbed my back soothingly. I knew he wouldn't say anything and get me in trouble. He would just hug me.
"I'm sorry, Ember. I'm so sorry." He kissed my forehead. Then the Commander walked back in.
"Private Carter, your time is up." He said, standing tall. I nodded and dried my eyes, pulling away from Alan.
"I'll see you soon, Al." I smiled at Alan before I walked out of the building. I stood thinking for a minute before I made up my mind. I ran to find Aaron. I jogged to the mess hall, then to our normal table.
"Ember!" The boys shouted. I sighted smiled at the sight of my friends, and sat down beside Aaron, who beamed at me, his dimples popping.
"Hey." He greeted me. He softly kisses my lips, putting an arm around my waist. "You okay?" He asked softly, noticing my demeanor. I shook my head. He sighed, and wrapped his arms around me in a tight hug.
"Tonight, meet me at the bridge." I told him quietly. He nodded, and kissed me again.
"Okay, baby." He agreed. I just wished that there could have been another way.
