Missing Mark

Without putting much thought into my actions I grabbed June by the arm and began to march down the steps leading to the roof. My head was swimming with so many unanswered questions that it felt like it might explode. "Hunter- Hey Hun-" in the distance, I could hear someone yelling my name as I turned the corner going down a second flight of steps. "HUNTER SLOW DOWN I CAN'T KEEP UP!" Came the voice again in a much louder tone as I stopped in my tracks in the middle of the stairs and stumbled toward when I felt June slam into my back. Slowly I dropped his hand and turned to face him with a blank stare for a second. "What...oh sorry!" I finally managed to stutter out with a shiver. "I didn't mean to tug you so hard... I was just so focused on getting away from him that I lost control of myself." I mumbled stammering over my words as June just smiled and watched me make a fool of myself.

"It's alright, I'm fine." He said in a cool tone of voice as he stared into my eyes and blushed lightly. I nodded and walked down the last couple of steps to the middle floor letting him follow me down. "Are you okay though? He didn't like to do anything strange to you right?" I shouted with a worried expression plastered on my face as he laughed and hopped down the last three steps. "Nope...just creeped me out with how friendly he was acting...oh also... whenever I'm with him my mark.." He took care to say the word mark in a whisper tone. "Acts weird like burning up or shifting a red color!" He continued pulling his sleeve up to show me but to both of our surprise, there was nothing there. "Wait...why isn't my mark there..." He asked in a worried tone of voice as he rubbed at his wrist where the black line we covered with concealer had been moments before as if it would magically make the mark disappear. I didn't blame him, though, since I was just as shocked and worried as he was. I quickly took my hand out of my pocket and checked my wrist to see that the mark we had made to match earlier was still drawn on my wrist. "Weird..." I whispered and looked at him even more confused and lost for words. "What does that mean Hunter..." he whined tugging on my arms now as he looked to me for answers but I wasn't sure what to say. This was the first I had ever seen anything like this happen with a soulmate mark as they were pretty straight forward. If you had a soulmate a mark of some sort would show up on your body and it was up to you to choose to listen to it or ignore it. Then the were the people with a grey or black line as a mark which meant they had lost their soulmate or the soulmate died before their meeting. Lastly, there were the people with no soulmate who wouldn't get any sort of mark, and though they were rare to see many people would end up that way.

I stared blankly at his wrist trying to process the new information and find the answer to his question. "I um...I'm not sure.." I mumbled softly and slowly as I furrowed my brows and scratched at the back of my head. "I'm gonna have to do some looking into this to know more but all I can think of is that maybe your soulmate is somewhere here or they never existed, to begin with."
