Her teeth and claws dug into my flesh. "Wendy!" I screamed. "Stop!"
She didn't seem to hear me. Her claws raked against my flank. Tears sprung to my eyes and I clenched my teeth. I looked up to see Wendy's wolfish face, her mouth in a snarl and blood-my blood- dripping from her fangs.
I was trying to push her off, but I was slowly losing strength. My antlers had protected my head, but there was nothing to protect the rest of my body, human or deer.
Wendy and I had casually been out on a walk in the woods. I had needed a break from all this trying to figure out how to turn us all back human. Day and night I worked on an antidote and nothing had worked! Mabel was still a mermaid, Soos a clay-man, Stan a gargoyle, Pacifica a gorgon, Wendy a werewolf and me a Deer, well, part deer.
My back legs fell out from under me and Wendy's hind leg's claws sunk deep into my flank, then started to go down my left side. I let out a cry and tears slipped down my . "Wendy! It's me, Dipper!"
Wendy snarled and gnashed her teeth at me, her eyes had lost their humanity. It scared me. "Wendy," I sobbed. I could feel her front claws shredding the back of my shirt and glancing my spine. Black spots danced in my vision. "Please..."
Someone tackled her off me. I fell to the ground. I could feel all of my wounds and the blood pouring from then. I looked through blurry vision at a fight between a stony figure and Wendy. Stan... was my last thought as I fell into darkness.
~
When I gained consciousness again, I was still on the ground of the forest and everything still hurt. Someone was standing over me. No, two people were. I saw bloody teeth and I jumped.
Wendy looked down and backed away from my vision. I swallowed. I guess she was herself again. I tried to sit up, but pricks of pain went through my whole body. I let out a yelp of pain.
"Not so fast, kid," Stan said. He carefully picked me up. "I've gotta get you home."
I caught sight of Wendy. She looked scared and shocked and she refused to look at me. Then I spot the place where I had passed out and almost puked. I knew I'd lost a lot of blood, but I couldn't believe that I'd lost that much. I closed my eyes and let Stan carry me back to the Shack.
~
Wendy didn't come back to the Shack for days. Days turned into weeks and after a month, I was starting to wonder if she'd ever come back. I'd recovered, but I still walked with a limp in one of my hind legs. One day, I decided to take the risk and go out and look for her. Mabel said that I shouldn't go alone, but I pointed out her fish tail and she slumped back in her tank. Stan said if I wasn't back by sunset, he'd come look for me.
Even though I'd been part deer for like...ever, I wasn't used to the antlers. They were fairly new and I could sharpen them against the trees like the other bucks did, because that would probably break my neck doing that. So my antlers were dull and pretty useless.
At about noon, I spotted a wolf-like figure, too big to be a normal wolf. "W-Wendy?"
Her head snapped to my voice. She growled at first but then, seeing it was me, stopped and hung her head.
"Wendy," I said. "It's not your fault. I know that your wolf instincts can kick in at any time, mostly at night. I had these deer instincts that tell me to run whenever a branch snaps or a sudden wind comes through, rustling the trees. I knelt down in front of her. She wouldn't look at me. "I'm gonna figure this out, don't worry." I started to pet her head then stopped. She was still a person under all that hair. I immediately felt my cheeks go red and scratched the back of my head. "S-sorry."
The haunting images of her inhumane, wolfish features filled my memories once again. I shook them off. No, that wasn't her.
"You've been gone for a month!" I said. "We all miss having you at the Shack. And Robbi's been looking for you. He won't leave us alone!"
Wendy snorted once. "Dipper-" she started to stay.
"It's okay," I said. "I forgive you."
She smiled softly. "Thanks."
I stood and would have helped her to her feet if her paws didn't have wicked sharp claws on the ends of them. There was another flash of memory. Those claws. The teeth...
I pushed the memory aside. I knew our friendship would have this barrier, probably forever. But I hoped that it didn't change it completely into some distant thing that usually crashed and burned.
So, the deer and the wolf walked home together in comfortable silence, neither of them wanting to talk, for fear of it turning into the finally words of their friendship.
