High school, there are typically two divisions of the subjects. One being STEM which includes the sciences and maths, and the other being liberal arts or humanities, consisting of languages and geography etc.

Students tend to lean on one side more than the other. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing as it helps them make a better choice when choosing university courses after CSAT.

Though, sometimes, there would be a drastic difference within the marks. Regardless how good you are at one, the teachers still found it important to at least have the other at a standard level, average.

문채아 Moon Chae Ah
top 5 in her year in STEM, specifically Math but failing in literature.

심재윤 Sim Jake
top 5 in his year in STEM, specifically Physics, but failing in literature.

Rivals in academics, it was far more than just comparing who did better at Maths and Physics, it was also hoping to not end up below the other in literature.

To the two, even though they might be academic rivals, they both had one common thought, which was the fact that they couldn't understand literature.

They couldn't understand the choice of words in a poem, what the metaphors meant and most importantly what the poem was trying to say.

Why the need for fancy twisted sentences when you can just say it straightforwardly?

They had the same dreaded feeling towards the subject, vowing to never touch it again after high school.

That hatred indeed remained after high school, but for a different reason; to never be reminded of this again.

The poems of the past are better left untouched, not wanting to analyse, for the meanings are too much to handle.

"Your literature sucks."

"Yours too."

"It's ok, let's start from zero then."

-That time we loved.

-Year 2017-
high school year 2

"Welcome back students into the second semester of year 2 in high school. I hope everyone had a restful break as we continue our literature journey!"

Mr Yoon, who was also class 7's form teacher, said.

"We'll be focusing on poems for the rest of the year and as you know next year would already be the CSAT so we don't have much time left before we start revision."

As Mr Yoon continued his mini speech Chae ah sat at the second last row at the corner of the classroom, spinning her pen while staring at the clock.

She glanced at her desk mate doodling quietly while she could hear light snoring noises from the person diagonally behind.

Jake was sleeping again in literature.

"So now to start the class let's have everyone say their favourite poems. Heeseung start us of."

The guy next to Jake stood up, chair screeching the floor slightly, jerking the sleeping beauty awake.

"Mine would be The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost."

He proudly said, describing his favourite line and other ramblings.

"Ah a great poem indeed, very inspiring especially for you youngsters."

Chae ah didn't hear what he was saying as she deeply wrecked her brain for any poem she could say when it was her turn, which was soon.

The only one she knew was about stupid flowers, embarrassing.

"It is a great poem to analyse and I'll try to do it in class. Next, Jake."

Confused and still half awake, Jake stood up as he heard his name. His hair a mess but still, his eye-catching features stood out under the bright sunlight.

"Favourite poem?"

Mr Yoon side-eyed the youngster, as he obviously wasn't paying attention.

"Err...Roses are red violets are blue."

His sweet deep voice was a little husky as he just woke up from his slumber, yet he sounded like a prince from some fairytale, confessing his love through a poem.

After a moment of silence, the whole class bursted into laughter, all but Chae ah.

While the class was laughing, Chae ah grumbled in frustration. That was the poem she wanted to say but Jake said it before she could.

Amidst the rowdy class, Jake caught Chae Ah glaring and instead of feeling embarrassed, he flashed a smirk of victory.

"Silence! Chae ah your turn."

Mr Yoon shushed the class.

Biting her lips, she couldn't even recall a single poem they did previously.

"It's...

she paused for a while, contemplating what to say.

"Never mind if you don't have a favourite just recommend any poem."

Mr Yoon's words supposedly was to make it less pressuring but some how it made her swallow back the words she wanted to say.

Mastering all her courage as she faced the class who awaited her answer, she took a deep breathe before blurting out,

"Twinkle twinkle little star."
