"Today I'll be going through another literary device. This one is rather simple to identify but you need to justify and describe the effects of it."

Mr Yoon started his lesson proper as they moved onto a new poem.

"Take a look at this poem and tell me what you think is the device."

"Repetition."

Chae ah confidently answered.

"Very good. At the beginning of Stanza's 2 to 4 it starts of the same way, 'Remember when we were kids'. This is clearly repetition but is would you use this for your explanation?"

"Repetition is used to remind someone again because it repeats?"

Jake tried answering.

"Not quite. If I say I want to drink coffee three times in a row what do you get from it?"

"You want to drink coffee."

Chae ah frowned at the question as it didn't make sense to her.

"Exactly, so repetition is used for emphasis. It reiterates and reinforces a point to the reader. And sometimes even show importance and urgency."

Mr Yoon wrote the explanation on the board while they jotted down notes.

"Just think about when was the last time someone repeated their words to you or when you repeated your words. What were they or yourself was trying to do? Why did you repeat your words?"

Chae ah suddenly recalled the scene before literature lessons, where Jake was running around the court, shouting the same phrases repeatedly.

"Chae ah is pretty! Chae ah is pretty!"

As if she could hear it ringing it her head. If according to Mr Yoon's explanation for repetition, it would meant that he was emphasising on what he said.

Even though Jake was forced to say it, he was the one who chose the last compliment, repeating it over and over again.

Coincidence much that Mr Yoon had to explain repetition today. Chae ah's mind couldn't tear away the thought of Jake. It was a bit too much that she questioned herself too.

There was no way that she has started to like him right?

Then what was this unsettling feeling? It was definitely not hatred or jealousy. Something like the season now, autumn, a little warm and fuzzy despite the cool breeze.

Unconsciously, her eyes trailed to her side, glancing at Jake. He looked calm as ever, but his ears told a different story compared to his facial expressions.

His ears were bright red, showing embarrassment but the question was why? He seemed lost in his thoughts as well, despite his hand moving and taking notes. A little dazed, he wasn't really concentrating either.

It couldn't be that he was thinking the same thing?

Chae ah didn't realise she was still staring, till Jake glanced over. Before she could react, he turned away immediately, surprised while his ears stayed bright red.

Covering his face with his arm that was resting in the table, Jake tried to hide his embarrassment.

Honestly speaking, he was thinking the same thing, when he called Chae ah pretty. Jake didn't think much about it up until now.

Just wanting to speak his mind, he called Chae ah pretty because that was the only compliment he could think off. Moreover, he also thought it was a good chance to tell her that she was pretty and not any less beautiful than other girls.
