The two sat silently, distance sat between the two as that's what it always was..
But that's not true.
The wind passed by swaying the leaves in the trees, the soft sound of birds and insects strung nearby. Macaque's ears shifted as he picked up all those sounds even to the smallest. Wukong looked off to the side, the two learned how to sit beside each other without starting anything, it took some time but they soon learned how to look at each other and say nothing rude.
"Can I ask you something Wukong?" Wukong took a deep breath in as he moved his head to look straight ahead of him. Not wanting to look at his old nemesis again.. not yet. "Yeah?" He answered back, he knew this conversation would only go two ways and two ways only.
Macaque crossed his arms over his stomach as he stared off into the distance, "Why did.." Macaque took a slow deep breath in, "Why did you do it?" Wukong could hear his own heartbeat begin to thump louder and faster, Macaque caught it and glanced towards Wukong. The silence stretched on and suddenly the surrounding insects and birds caught on to the silence and followed.
It was deafening. "Well? What's your answer." No answer came and once again both their ears began to ring. "It's a foolish answer.." Macaque grit his teeth as a low growl came from the back of his throat, "But I was commanded go. I was angry, conflicted.." Macaque scoffed and Wukong turned to look at him. His eyes narrowed as if the scoff had spoken all their insults in one.
"Conflicted. That's it!" A small laugh escaped through Macaque's lips, he covered his face with one of his hands. "You could've at least tried man." His smile disappeared and his usual gloomy demeanor came back. Wukong winced as he couldn't help but just look at Macaque, he didn't want to look away.
He.. he couldn't.
"No–.. I was forced to– to protect the monk I had been traveling with." Macaque's motionless face turned to look at him, their eyes locking with each other and Wukong could feel those dull golden eyes boring holes into his bright golden ones.
It hurt seeing his old friend, in such masked pain.
"I was angry too. That you were mocking me, looking and acting just like me.. getting my friends on your side. It hurt watching them like you more than the real me." Macaque's eyes narrowed as if inspecting Wukong. As if inspecting the stupid 'lie' he just told.
A soft breeze came in and it ruffled their fur, "And when.. I looked for you, I wasn't able to find you. I wasn't able to find any trace of you, not even in Diyu." Macaque flinched at the name of the place he had been kept at for years, tortured.
Wukong was about to speak again when he bit his lip..
He really should stop talking, all he ever did was hurt his old partner more and more with his words.
It's what he seemed to be destined to do.
"And..?" Wukong was shocked to hear that Macaque wanted him to go on, knowing it did go on.
"When.. when the job was done, I couldn't help but feel as if I had ripped a part of me and burned it into ashes." Wukong could physically see Macaque's eyes soften as his words spilled out, his throat tightened and he hated how he felt like his eyes warmed up and blurred with tears.
He forced his body to calm down. Not wanting to show that he was indeed on the brink of tears.. "I never wanted to." His voice lowered nearly to a whisper.
"I never wanted to see your bright eyes dull as they closed, looking right at me as your life left. Because of me." Macaque's ears lowered as if reacting to his emotions, to the pain in his voice.
The two knew Wukong could never fake so much hurt, even Macaque accepted the fact he to couldn't. And he learned how to act to stop such emotions from coming out.
"I did it because I thought you had already left me behind. Even after I gave you my red scarf.." Wukong covered his mouth as his lower lip quivered. His eyes closed a little more as tears pricked at the corner of his eyes, he hated how pitiful and weak he looked. It didn't live up to his great and powerful name.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I made you feel that way, think that way." Wukong answered back, his voice came out raspy as tears quickly streamed down his face. His face felt hot and red and he watched how Macaque watched him with pained eyes.
Comforting each other with words was the first step to healing, touch would only be the second big step..
And they were no where near that step but that was alright. "And I'm sorry I ever thought you did it for selfish reasons."
"I'm the one who's suppose to say sorry. I'm the one who took your precious life away, I was the source of all your hate..pain." Macaque let out a shaky breath as he swallowed back the sob that threatened to free itself. He knew that he couldn't show such weakness, Wukong might be but he isn't Wukong..
Not his shadow. Not anymore.
"Hearing you say sorry was enough." Wukong gave a shaky smile as he wiped away the ongoing tears, why should he be crying? He was the one who took everything and burned it to the ground.
He felt even more weak..
He was weak. "But I'm not ready to forgive you, it'll take alot more than just a sorry. Wùkōng." Wukong nodded and understood where Macaque came from. A sorry couldn't and would never heal decades of hurt, Wukong accepted that.
"But maybe I am ready to forgive a part of you."
It was time for some healing angst. Everyone deserved it)
