From the rooftop of the natural food store, she could see directly across the street, see what used to be Cat's Haunt. The piles of rubble, bricks, wooden beams, glass, and plaster that were everything she'd ever tried for. The yellow police tape that sealed it off. The chalk outline where Ice Breaker was announced dead.
A gust of warm sweet wind blew back her hair. She had one foot up on the ledge, the other foot firmly planted on the ground, watching the golden sun as it descended through the sky.
"Tonight, my friends, we avenge Ice Breaker. Tonight we'll comb this city brick by brick until we find the ones responsible and make them pay. Tonight we'll give this city every ounce and every shred of energy and breath we've got. Jitters, you're going to take me upon your shoulder, and we'll speed through midtown, every building we can, including basements. Herald, you're going to take Rhinestone Cowgirl and fly through uptown. Evanesce, Living Weapon, you two will be teleporting across downtown. Leave no stone unturned, no questions unasked, no doors unopened. Cops are on the hunt as well. If you find something, hit your pagers immediately. If you feel your pagers buzz, drop everything. Any questions?"
"I've got one," Olivia said.
Zoey took her foot down from the ledge, turned just enough to be able to look at her while still keeping an eye on the sky. Nodded for her to speak.
"Should we try to capture Deadcode alive?" She asked.
"You can try. But if it comes down to it don't hold back," Zoey replied.
"And Total Chaos?" Rhinestone Cowgirl questioned.
"I know he hurt you, so if you want to kill him go for it. He turned on us. He killed Ice Breaker. And he betrayed your trust. So do with him what you will," Zoey said.
She reached her hand up to her collar, pressed the button, and shifted into a small grey cat. She trotted over to Jitters. Scrambled up her side and grappled onto her shoulder.
"Ow ow ow. Watch the claws!" Jitters complained.
"I hope you're well stocked on energy drinks."
Jitters gestured to the collection of caffeine shots on her belt. Picked one off and twisted the cap. Downed it in ten seconds.
"Very well stocked, Wild Claw."
The sun grazed the tops of the tall buildings scraping the skyline. The sky turned into a painter's palette, streaked with orange and pink, and deep blue. Lights inside people's apartments started to switch on as they came home for the night, unaware of the events that were about to transpire.
It's time.
"Let's save Dusk Harbor."
