The two sat upon the bridge, legs dangling. Toby had his head buried in his arms, sitting with his knees up. The wind was mild, blowing their hair. Both sat there, half in disbelief, the other half in utter disappointment.
"Is this what you have to deal with everyday?" Lyra asked, her gaze darkening over the thin river that flowed under them.
Toby was quiet, silently crying it seemed. That scared him. The whole fight. The fact he saw his sister punch someone for the first time. He wondered why she hasn't done that to a specific someone else yet.
Lyra slightly leaned on him. The road was empty, just them and the wind. The sound of the water was the only other thing they could hear.
Toby had a small cut over his nose, it bled just slightly. Looking down at his hands, his knuckles specifically. The bandages around them were sorta ripped, and his knuckles were red from all of the hitting he did. They're usually always a little bruised. Other kids wouldn't be the only thing he punched.
Lyra eventually leaned off and put an arm around the brunette, pulling him into a side hug, just sitting there for another thirty minutes or so.
The wind picked up a little during that time, sending chills through them both. Toby couldn't feel the strong temperatures. Usually what would burn others, just felt warm to him, and something like ice would just feel a little cool.
When it snowed, Toby couldn't comprehend the fact that other people bundled up so much. This only meant he could be dying of hypothermia and not even know it. Shivering was no different than his usual tremors.
"Should we head home?" Lyra finally spoke, breaking the silence.
Toby looked up, sniffling. He gave a nod.
Lyra knew he was crying, getting an idea.
She helped pull him to his feet and laid his hat over his head, pushing the bridge of it down over his face playfully. Toby laughed weakly, pushing it back up with a stumble.
"C'mon, I wanna see that smile." The girl laughed out, trying to lighten the mood, and it worked so far.
The wind only got stronger, and Toby got that paranoid feeling again.
"What's up?" Lyra asked, looking in the general direction her brother was staring in. He could see its tall figure looming among the trees, but she didn't seem to see anything.
Before he knew it, Lyra was pulling him into the car. "Here, we have a long road home, so I figured you'd wanna rest in the back, I know how riding in the front for a while makes you car sick."
Toby huffed lightly, sitting down in the back. "Not anymore." He argued back, feeling the inner embarrassment.
"Mhm sure." The girl returned to the front seat and started the car, driving out from the bridge and headed home. The sun was almost set by the time they arrived.
Toby did in fact fall asleep on the way. A small smile painted Lyra's face to the sight of the sixteen year old.
She didn't want to wake him, so she lifted him from the back and carried him in.
After getting in, Lyra got away with the excuse of going for a drive and Toby falling asleep. Technically it was the truth, but nothing about the fight was brought up. The cut on Toby's face was hidden by the bridge of his hat that was positioned over his face while he slept.
Lyra dressed his arms again from the old ripped bandages to new ones, then took him to bed. Sometimes she felt like his mom, though just being five years older, and his sister. Their mom was currently asleep, and dinner was left out on the table.
Lyra ate her own plate whilst storing Toby's away in the fridge for when he woke up.
She wanted to make sure he ate.
Meanwhile, Toby was having weird dreams. At least they weren't as bad as the gory organ ones, but these recent dreams did talk a lot about sacrifice. Toby was far too used to these dreams for them to wake him up unlike how they used to make sleep almost impossible.
Toby was just glad he finally fell asleep on his own.
