Those Destined To Bring Change

Samantha relives a dream she's been having for a while now. She's trapped back in the facility being tested and experimented on. Today's test was one that was excruciatingly painful for several different reasons. 

After Rava managed to break several things in the base that would otherwise be unbreakable and not even detectable by spirits in general, doctor Paul saw it necessary to discover exactly what spirit was within Samantha. 

There are several ways to draw a spirit out of its host, playing certain notes at certain pitches can agitate spirits and force them out. Threatening the life of the host was another way. Introducing other things like smells, sights, and opportunities. However Rava did not want to be discovered, so he refused to come out, a tiring process. Samantha also didn't wish to bring out Rava after accidentally letting him slip which prompted the experiments to begin with.

Samantha found herself one morning after breakfast strapped to a metal bed held upright in an empty chamber. Many wires and cables were hooked up to monitor Samantha's heart rate, brain activity, and other essential functions. Through a glass window, the scientists examining Samantha and Doctor Paul sat watching carefully for any signs of reactions. 

They started simple enough, they introduced sounds of other animals, dogs, cats, mice, birds, prey, and predators. Rava had no response, although, at the sounds of wounded animals, he seemed to grow hungrier which made Samantha's stomach growl. Pitch test, no tones, low or high seemed to disturb Rava.

Smells were next, smells of toxins, deification, foods, and water, however no reaction. Once again there was a reaction to the smell of blood, which correlated with the sound of wounded prey. That was enough to deduce Rava was an apex predator, yet they wanted to know which one. What predator was strong enough to break some of the best-designed machines and security measures? Which one was smart enough to even detect them to begin with? They were determined to have their answer.

They changed the temperature in the room from extreme heat to extreme cold. In the heat, Samantha broke a small sweat where some would have passed out in minutes. Yet they kept the temperature there for what felt like hours. They switched to extreme colds, with the small sweat against her skin, the shift to cold was more uncomfortable than anything. Especially so when the drops of sweat froze to her skin. The spirit had tremendous abilities to regulate its body's temperature. 

Next were more physical stimuli. Sharp objects flew near Samantha at high speeds to test for a reflexive reaction from the spirit. Although Samantha was certainly frightened by the ring of things flying by her ear, she and Rava contained their reactions. Despite the desire to react. However, the scientists did notice something. When Samantha blinked next, her eyelids blinked from side to side instead of up and down. Her eyelids were also covered in what appeared to be a black smoke-like substance. Telltale signs of a dark spirit.  Her retinas also for a brief moment seemed to be more in the form of slits than actual eyes. Samantha hurriedly blinked again and her blink was normal and her eyes were normal. The spirit was reptilian. 

From the metal table, a small shock surprised Samantha's back, it wasn't painful, although she knew it would eventually become excruciating. Another dart flew by her cheek, and it managed to cut her and draw blood. Rava growled at being toyed with and Samantha began to push against her restraints. To everyone's surprise, the metal restraints began to bend. 

"No! Don't give them what they want!" Samantha mumbled to herself and resisted Rava's urge to break free. Another dart flew by, and Samantha caught it between her teeth, which were surrounded once again by a cloud of black smoke. They were sharper and pointed for a moment, but when she spit out the dart her teeth were back to normal. Strong, instinctive, sharp teeth, so many predators aligned with their results. They needed to narrow it down. They needed more data.
