Chapter 1

Hi. My name's Sophie Foster. I'm 20 and I live in the kingdom of Everglen. I live happily with my adopted parents, Grady and Edaline. My real parents left me when I was seven and ditched in an alley with no clothes and nothing to eat. But then Grady and Edaline found and sheltered me. And after a few weeks of living in there house they decided to adopt me.

And just my luck, turns out Grady was Head Guard of the king's army which meant he knew the king. And quite well might I add. They were good friends. And ever since I got adopted I got introduced to the queen, princes, and princess. Queen Della, Prince Alvar, Prince Fitz, and Princess Biana. And we became the best of friends. And when I was 12 I had secretly developed a crush on Fitz. We were both the same age and Biana was a year younger than us.

After that I practically lived in the castle, in fact I have my own room. And today was the day Fitz was going to pick the lucky 26 girls that will enter the selection, try to win his heart, and be the new queen of Everglen. And I had applied. I know it was kind of stupid of me. If I do end up being in the selection and Fitz doesn't end up choosing me then our friendship would never be the same. And who knows if we would be friends.

I sat on the couch in between Edaline and grabbed the remote turning on the TV to The Report.

"Hello citizens of Everglen! My name is Marella Redek and I will be hosting The Report! Today is the day where Prince Fitz will choose 26 lucky girls to be in the selection trying hard to win his heart and the new queen of Everglen!" the camera shifted to Fitz where he looked as cute as ever in his new suit and a barrel stood beside him full of names of girls that have applied to be in the selection.

"All right Prince. Start picking!" Marella said cheerfully. Fitz put his hand in and picked one up and read the name. That kept happening for the next 25 girls and none of them were me. One of them was an actor, Stina Heks. She's really famous and everyone loved her but I don't see what the big deal is. I held my breath as he pulled out the last name. He read and his jaw dropped and he was speechless.

"Uhm Prince? Mind telling us who the last lucky girl is?" Fitz snapped out of his daze and cleared his throat.

"And the last lucky girl is a 2, Sophie Foster," I spit out the water I was drinking as Edaline stood and clapped, a huge smile on her face.

"Oh my god! You're going to be in the selection! I'm so happy for you!" she cheered, still clapping.

"And that's it folks! Congrats to the lucky 26 girls who were selected and join us next week where where we'll have all the selected right here in front of the cameras! Good bye and we'll see you next time!" and then The Report got shut off and I still sat there speechless.

I was in the selection. Everything was going to change.

Edaline called Grady downstairs and he looked very tired.

"What happened?"

"Our little girl is in the selection!" his eyes widened and I stood up and walked to Edaline.

"Really?" Edaline nodded excitedly.

"Did you not watch it?" he shook his head.

"I forgot it was today. Congrats, but you don't seem so happy about it Soph," I looked at the ground.

"I'm kind of having second thoughts. What happens if he doesn't choose me and sends me home? Everything's going to change between us," then they both started laughing.

"Why are you laughing? This isn't something to joke about," Grady leaned on the railing, tears of laughter rolling down his cheeks.

"Forgive us sweetheart, we're laughing because we find that idea absurd. There's no way Fitz could send you home. He likes you."

"No he doesn't, what are you talking about?" Edaline sighed.

"Oh believe us, he does, you were just oblivious to see that. Now you need to pack, all the selected girls leave tomorrow afternoon," I nod and go to my cousin Dex's room. Dex lives with us because he works as a guard in the kings army and since his family lives far away from the palace he moved in with. He also knows the prince and princess really well and when he isn't training he usually hangs out with us.

I knock on his door and hear a "Come in." I go in and see him on his bed reading a book. I sat on the edge of his bed.

"What's up. I heard today was the day Fitz picks out the 26 girls that will be in the selection. And I know you applied."

"I got selected." I mumbled.

"That's great! You've been crushing on him since we were twelve, but you really don't seem that happy about it. I expected you to smile and start talking about how you have such a big crush on him. What's wrong?" I fiddled with my fingers. I opened my mouth to speak but he already beat me to it. "You're worried he's going to send you home?" I nod and he smiles.

"Believe me you have nothing to worry about. Fitz feels the same way about you and honestly I don't know how you don't see it. Mark my words Sophie you will be the next queen of Everglen,"

Does Fitz really like me? I mean Grady, Edaline, Biana, and now Dex? Does Fitz actually feel the same way about me?

With several thoughts running through my head, I smiled at Dex and gave him a hug.

"Thanks Dex."

"No problem cuz. Now I believe you have some bags to pack for tomorrow's travel," he grinned and I nodded and left the room. I went to my room and grabbed my bags and went through my closet and chose my favorite outfits which were all a shirt and pants. I put other stuff in there and stuffed a few books in a bag. I was now ready to go to the palace.

Except I wasn't going to be known has Sophie Foster the daughter of Head Guard but I was going in as a selected.
