Hours later.Flashback – 31st of October 2022
I awakened to the sound of sirens and the feeling of someone standing over me, but there was not anyone there. Is it just my imagination? Everything was blurry. As I regain consciousness, the scene becomes clearer. I try my hardest to tilt my head up and get aware of my surroundings, I was in complete darkness when I woke up, but I could sense I was in the middle of nowhere. In the distance, I saw a car turn over on its side, and then when I looked around, there were police officers all over the place. It looked like they were blocking the traffic from coming down the road. What is happening?
As I try to get up, I look to the right of me. I saw a figure that looked like a young girl my age fighting for her life, with paramedics crowding the individual doing CPR. What has happened to me? I kept asking myself. I cannot remember anything. I did not have the energy to get myself up. I lay on my side and closed my eyes for a few minutes. As I closed my eyes, I could hear voices in the background, and then suddenly, a smell came over me like something was on fire. I felt my heart pounding with the fear of dying. The sound of the sirens. They echoed in my ears, I felt powerless, and my whole body felt like a dead weight. I could not move my hand, my head, or my body. I slowly started blinking, desperately trying to open my eyes. Where am I? What is going on? I begin to panic.
My body ached with pain, and my muscles were sore all over; it felt like I had run a hundred miles. When I looked down at myself, I noticed my arms were scratched with cuts and bruises. I tried to open my mouth to speak, but there was no sound. Nobody can hear me. "Could that small figure be Sofia? I pray that it is anybody else. I could not imagine what I would do if anything happened to my best friend. I try to move, but my body is in agonising pain, 'Do not try to get up, says the paramedic.
"Why did you not listen to the advice the paramedics told you to give?" Crawford asked.
"Well, I wanted to find Sofia", I replied, and after the paramedic asked me to stay on the ground, I did not.
Flashback
I push myself up with great strength, gritting my teeth through the pain. I stagger closer to the figure on the floor before collapsing again. I get more intimate, and a wave of relief washes over me. It is not Alisha.
"Excuse me, what is happening?" Have you seen my best friend? I asked, but I am still waiting to hear back from someone. The paramedics were talking to me, but I blocked them out. All I cared about was finding Alisha. I was not worried about myself. "Can you please stand back? This is an active crime scene," the police officer replied as he turned back to talk to the other police officers. If it is not Sofia, then who is it? And where is Sofia? There was a deadly silence.
A few minutes later, I heard a voice; it sounded like somebody was crying for help. I dropped my phone on the floor and ran to see who it was. I can feel my phone vibrate in my back pocket. Looking down at it, I can barely recognise the caller's name through the cracked screen. The caller was my ex-boyfriend Jamie, I tried to answer, but my hands were trembling because my anxiety was high. I picked up the phone. "Jamie, I need your help", I mumbled. "Misha, calm down. What is going on? I cannot hear you properly,". Jamie said. "Can you hear me now? I have been in a car accident," I responded as I cried. Jamie had no response; the signal must have gone because of the storm.
'No, please work' I was trying to get the signal back on my phone.
As the words leave my mouth, I see a necklace on the edge of the grass. I ran over to the chain, this necklace was shaped like an infinity sign, and a snake ran through it. I was confused because Alisha and I have a matching, but it does not have a snake. I noticed a ditch that needed to be visible from the road. As I look down into it, I brace myself, and there she lies. "Sofia, are you okay?" I shouted. Looking at her, she was, lying covered in cuts and seeing her body covered in bruises.
"Hello, can anyone hear me?" I screamed at the top of my lungs. Her lifeless body was getting colder and colder. She closed her eyes. I bent down on my knees and lay next to her holding her stone-cold hands and crying my eyes out until I had no tears left. Blood dripped down from my head, but I did not care about myself; I only wanted to keep her alive. "Please, can someone HELP?'' I screamed and shouted. Blood was dripping off my hands like thick bath water. I held her close to my chest to keep her warm" You always make scenes, Sofia. I laughed as I looked down at Sofia. Sofia struggled to speak but was still alert and responded to what I said. "Misha... listen to me. I am so sorry for everything I have done to you, making your life hell," Sofia said as she lost consciousness.
' SHE'S DEAD" I yelled and cried uncontrollably.
The ambience was meant to come. I did ring them, I swear. I promised Sofia I would get emergency help, but it was too late. We are in the middle of nowhere; they may need help finding where we are, and I need to know and need a signal to use my phone. There is nothing I can do to get help because I cannot leave Sofa. Alone... she is gone. If I had found her earlier, she would have still been alive. It is all my fault.
I kept crying on Sofia, and it should have been me lying there dead, not her. Eventually, the ambulance arrived when they found us, and it was too late. I was heartbroken seeing my best friend lying there stone cold as the paramedics tried to save Sofia. "Sorry, I can't continue this. It is tough for me to talk about, making me have flashbacks," I choked up, and tears rolled down my face.
Detective Fiona Crawford: "Misha, I will ask you again, did you murder Sofia, yes or no?" The detective demanded.
Misha: "I swear I didn't do it. "I pleaded.
I became hysterical; I tried to breathe in and out to prevent myself from having a panic attack. The tears streaming down my face refused to stop even though I wanted to control them, but they continued to fall down my face, and I continued to speak without crying more.
Misha: I would not kill someone; I don't have it in me to do something like that"." I gasped.
Detective Fiona Crawford "I know this must be hard, but we need a full statement, Misha" She insisted that I continue making my statement, and I did.
Flashback
It was disturbing watching the paramedics confirming the death of Sofia. Watching them as I was asked to stand back, I had no words; I was shaken up. All I heard was "Time of death", and I fell to the ground crying more. They covered her lifeless body with a white sheet. The time of death was 12.30 am. Jamie came to see what was happening because I rang Jamie earlier for help. I was devastated and in shock. That is the only way that I can describe it. Misha come on, you need to get up off the ground and move away from Sofia so the people can take care of her," Jamie said as he reached his hand to help me. I looked at him and Sofia.
"I can't leave her alone here," I said emotionally while I got hold of his hand, and he pulled me up and hugged me tightly. ''SHE'S DEAD" I screamed and cried uncontrollably.
"Everything is going to be okay ", Jamie said.
As I turned around, I saw the undertaken arrived, and it made me feel sick to the stomach. All that was left to do was cover her face with the white sheet. Something that I did not prepare for, and it will haunt me for the rest of my life. They covered Sofia's face, raised her body on a stroller, and transferred her into the van. I fell into Jamie's arms; I realised that Sofia was gone for good; after years of friendship, we had turned into enemies because she made us like that.
Detective Fiona Crawford: ''So you wanted to get your revenge, did you?''
Misha: No, I did not; even though I told you what happened between us, I tried to save her life.
Detective Fiona Crawford: Tell me what the background of your friendship is.
Flashback
It all began at Alexander Hume High School. Sofia and I became close friends in the first year, and she got Jamie and me together. However, everything changed after year 7. I do not know what made her turn against me. She became a popular girl in the school. Sofia made everybody turn against me when I did nothing wrong; Sofia even got Jamie to end our relationship because of her twisted lies and games.
Detective Fiona Crawford: From what you told me, you did not get on with each other.
Misha: Yes, we did not because she bullied me throughout high school. Detective Fiona Crawford: You wanted her to get her karma, so you caused the accident.
