I sat at the long, rectangle dinner table in the Singh's house.
This is it.
I thought.
Me and Ravi where ready, ready for whatever was about to come.
We where gonna tell Ravi's mom, dad, and Sal that we where now- offically dating.
I looked over at Ravi, who had his hand tangled in mine, his foot tapping anxiously. I squeezed his hand- in an attempt to reassure him that everything was going to be okay.
Nisha walked in the room, a big bowl of soup in her arms- it was obviously heavy. Too heavy for her because her hands where shaking.
She placed the bowl down with a smile and clapped her hands together, staring at her
perfect soup. She then looked at Ravi and I, and smiled an even wider smile- which I didn't think was possible.
Mohan and Sal walked in aswell.
Sal took a seat across from me, and Mohan sat at the head of the table. Nisha sat beside Sal.
silence.
Mohan cleared his throat,
"Shall we pray?"
We all nodded, and Mohan began the prayer.
The prayer lasted for about three minutes and my mouth was pratically watering by the time it was over from the smell of the curry.
"Guests get their serving first, Sal.", Nisha said as Sal desperately reached for the spoon in the bowl.
He joking rolled his eyes with a smile and put the spoon down.
All eyes on me.
I looked at Ravi, and exhaled a breathe I hadn't know i'd been holding- grabbing the spoon and the small soup bowl infront of me. I took two scoops and poured them into my bowl- afterwards passing the spoon and bigger bowl to Ravi.
"Ok, does everybody have their curry now?"
Nisha asked, after the bowl had taken its turn around the table.
I nodded with a smile and a thumbs up- trying to refer that I was good.
My mouth was filled with soup, and I almost spit it out with Ravi spoke up.
"So uh- me and Pip have an announcement."
I looked over at him, eyes wide.
Right now?
I swallowed and nodded, wiping my mouth with a napkin.
My heart raced, a million thoughts filled my head.
What if they don't approve?
What if something goes wrong?
What if-
"Go on, son." Mohan said, stuffing his mouth with another spoonful of curry.
Ravi squeezed my hand, and i looked over at him with a small smile.
"We're uhm- We're together. Were dating."
A loud spitting sound rang through my hears as I looked at Sal. He had spit his soup out, eyes widened.
"REALLY?" He yelled, slapping his hands on the table.
I laughed and looked at Ravi, then back at Sal.
"Yea, it's been about a week now- We thought we'd wait a little before we told y'all." I said.
Silence filled the room again, and Nisha looked at Mohan with a smile on her face- although she was trying to hide it.
"I CALLED IT." Sal yelled, getting up and spinning around., then pointed at his dad
"You owe me five bucks." He said, sticking his tongue out. Ravi's mouth opened.
"You guys had a bet on us?" He asked, looking between Sal and Mohan. We all began laughing at the thought of Mohan and Sal thinking we would date, and we are. After we ran out of laughter, Nisha raised her hands and looked at me.
"Well, I approve of Pip. She's a sweet young lady. And maybe she'll make you keep that room clean." She laughed. Laughter broke out again and I placed my hands on top of Nisha's.
"Thank you, Mrs.Singh. I appreciate it. So so much"
She nodded and now we all looked over at Mohan, who also has shining eyes and a big smile upon his face.
"I approve to!" He said. And suddenly my body filled with happiness and I looked over at Ravi- who also- I assumed- felt the same way:
We spent the rest of the night, laughter, smiles, and talks about how Ravi nervously asked me out just eight days ago: hands shaking, and sweating at dinner. I looked around, at the table of people I had gotten use too.
I can get use to this.
