I came home from going to the market to grab some ingredients for dinner. Muriel didn't want to come, and I wasn't going to push him knowing how he feels about crowds. I think it's a good thing he didn't come because the market was especially crowded today.
I open the door to the hut to find Muriel in the corner with his knees up to his chest, obviously crying. I hurry and drop my bags on the table as I rush to him.
"Muriel, baby, what's wrong?" I whisper, not wanting to frighten him. I sit beside him rubbing his shaking arm.
"Why?" He asks.
"Why what Muri?" I ask softly.
He lifts his head from his knees and he turns his head towards me. "Why do you stay?"
I stop rubbing his arm, shocked by the question. It took a lot longer to answer the question than I'd like, but it's hard recovering from shock to questions you're not prepared for.
"Because I-"
"You don't have to lie to me, Y/n. Just leave."
"No. Muriel let me finish. You don't get to push me away every time you're not ready to hear the truth. And the truth is that I stay because I love you. I love spending time with you. I love making dinner with you. I love feeding the chickens with you. I love cuddling up to you at night. I love your kisses and your hugs. I love you Muriel, and I'm not going anywhere." I rushed everything out in case he tried to interrupt me again.
He stared at me with shock before he started to cry again, "I don't deserve you."
"Oh Muriel, baby, you deserve me as much as I deserve you." I whisper hugging him reassuringly.
After he calmed down a bit I asked the question that had been at the tip of my tongue this entire time, "Why were you crying when I walked in?"
"These." He says as he points to his scars.
My heart broke a little, because one thing I loved to do was trace over them and whisper how much I loved every part of him.
With a frown, I traced over one on his back and kissed it. Muriel sucked in a breath as I did so.
"What are you doing?" He whispered, voice strained.
"Showing you how much I love everything about you." I kissed another.
"These are a part of you Muriel," and another, "don't think that having these changed how I view you."
I kissed a few more, "You may not like these, but I sure as hell do. I know they didn't come from the best circumstances but just know they made you who you are today."
I kissed the rest until the only one left was the one on his face, I kissed that one too.
"And I'll keep kissing them until you learn to love them just as much as I do." I whisper, smiling at him. "I love you with every single ounce of my body, Muriel. Don't you ever doubt how much I love you."
He looked at me with tears and affection before crashing his lips onto mine.
"You just proved my point, I really don't deserve you." He says as he pulls away.
"Muriel, you deserve everything on this damned earth." I say, "I just wish I could give it all to you."
He slowly shook his head, smiling slightly. He picked me up bridal style and walked over to our bed.
He placed me down gently before laying down next to me. He held me close to him.
"What about dinner?" I asked, resting my head on his chest.
"It can wait, for now let's just rest."
"I love you Muriel." I whisper before closing my eyes.
"I love you Y/n." he says as he runs his hand through my hair.
I feel asleep in the arms of the man I love unconditionally.
