Chapter 11
"You've been bad Jane, Matthew said two months but you've been in a coma for three."
Lisbon chided trying not to sound sad.
"It's not very nice to keep a girl waiting."
No response, just the clicks and sounds coming from the machines in the room. She smoothes his golden curls away from his eyes coming across a scar on his forehead that had yet to disappear. A pang of guilt settles in the silence around them so strong you could cut it with a knife. Lisbon was the one at fault, the one who knew this whole time who attacked her and yet she didn't say a word. I guess they were right when they said 'Secrets can kill'. Was Jane even alive anymore or was it the machines keeping whatever's left alive?
Lisbon grabs her cane and stands up, leaning against it. She can't stay here anymore, first the person she loved more then anything ends up near death and then she kills her own brother. Lisbon had nothing, the one person who ever really mattered was hooked up to so many machines she doubted he would ever wake up again.
A strangled sound comes out when she opens the door making her immediately look back. Jane was awake but trying to pull the oxygen tube out so that he could talk. His pain was so apparent that she couldn't help herself and took his hand away from the tube.
"Hi."
Was all she could choke out.
He looks up at her and then the cane causing him to cry as though he had failed her. Unable to wipe away his tears she does it for him.
"Please don't cry, I've gotten better. It was a surprise, for you."
All he can do is blink in surprise.
"I can walk now and holds thing to, a few weeks more of therapy and I can finally get rid of this cane. God it makes me feel so old."
Jane's blue eyes brightened up at the thought of her getting better but it was short lived after she admitted that she had to leave.
"I'm going to call for a doctor but I'll come back alright?"
He watches her leave the room mentally begging her to stay. Jane could still remember not being able to stop Adrian from going inside and hearing the shots as he gunned down the love of Jane's life. But here she is, alive and better. He couldn't get enough of it.
A doctor comes in and checks him over afterwards examining the machines before turning them off. He tells Jane that it might hurt but the consultant wasn't even paying attention to him, all he could do was stare at her as though she would vanish without a trace. The doctor was correct about taking the breathing tube out causing Jane to gasp for air before breathing normally.
"I'll have to put you on morphine before unhooking you to the rest of the machines."
"Take them out now!"
He attempts to reach them again causing Lisbon to push him back down.
"I won't let you get hurt again, he knows what he's doing he's a doctor."
Jane begins to panic.
"What if I never wake up?"
"Sweetheart morphine doesn't cause a coma you'll be fine."
She frowns.
"Don't you ever say that again."
"Miss Lisbon we need Jane to stay overnight just to make sure everything's okay."
"Alright."
"No! I don't want to stay here anymore, tell him Teresa!"
Jane begins to whine and complain to no avail eventually stopping when it sinks in that both the doctor and Lisbon are going to make him stay. The doctor leaves giving them time to talk before readying the morphine.
"You cut your hair?"
"Adrian never thought before he acted so I cut my hair and put it on the couch. He shot at that, not me."
"Oh...I like it."
"Thanks."
Suddenly Jane gets serious.
"I promise you Teresa I will get my revenge, he won't be a threat for long."
"Adrian's dead Jane, I knifed him."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You're lying-"
The doctor comes in and interrupts the both of them.
"Alright it's time for the morphine."
"But-"
Lisbon smiles at a worried Jane and leans down, planting a kiss on his forehead.
"You'll be fine, I'll take you home tomorrow."
