Chapter 13

Lisbon watches him sleep, the bittersweet reunion eating away at her. She was so happy he recovered from the hospital but she couldn't stop blaming herself over what happened. Maybe I should leave, go far far away and never look back...Jane should heal eventually, he'll find someone better. Lisbon thinks to herself before sitting up in bed, was she really going to do this? A hand reaches out and holds her hand, Jane was awake and by the look on his face he knew what she was about to do.

"Stay." He says softly, noting her sad expression.

"I can't..."

"Why not? I love you."

Lisbon looks away in shame causing Jane to sit up and wrap an arm around her shoulders.

"You're going to hate me."

"Teresa I would never-"

"I knew it was Adrian. The whole time."

He sits there in shocked silence, her words starting to sink in. Teresa begins to cry and hastily wipes away her tears, she couldn't do this to him.

"I knew you'd hate me."

"No, no I don't. I'm disappointed, but I could never hate you. Is that why you're trying to run?"

"Maybe." She whispers in response.

"Teresa you should've told me! Adrian wanted to take your life!"

"I'm sorry okay!?," Lisbon abruptly gets up from bed, grabs her cane, and storms/hobbles out of the room with Jane following close behind. "Leave me alone Jane!"

"No! What happened to you, why didn't you tell me? This isn't like you at all!"

Needless to say the argument raged on between the two, shifting from Teresa's secret to Jane's guilt and back again. Both agent and consultant felt defeated, their anger was only giving more pain and this senseless debate on what the other should do was getting them nowhere. The fight eventually ended in the kitchen where a tired Lisbon is making coffee and a faulty Jane is sipping tea. He watches her for a moment, marveling at the way she can hold things and walk just the way she used to. Well, aside from the cane and the weak legs. He was beginning to realize that she couldn't walk for very long and needed to sit down every once and a while. Jane looks from his tea to his friend knowing he had to patch things up.

"I never meant to yell, I was confused and hurt so it came out that way."

"..."

"You're making a lot of progress Teresa, I bet the team is proud of you."

"Well Matthew claims I won't need the cane for very long.", Teresa takes a swig of coffee before looking at Jane. "I had a suspicion that it was Adrian so I voiced my concerns to Matthew. You weren't there at the time so he was the only one around. Matthew then convinced me not to tell."

"What did he say?"

"Basically that I shouldn't worry because if it is Adrian he's in jail so there isn't really a point."

"Really Teresa? That isn't you, it would take more then that to keep someone as determined as you silent."

"Well," she looks away, "He did say something else."

"Go on."

"How many people am I willing to lose."

Their conversation is interrupted when her phone rings and Jane is left to ponder her brother's words. It began to sink in how much of a suspect Matthew was. Anyone can kill, murder is a choice after all.
