I let go of the hug.
"Let's get on the ride," I say, moving past him and sitting down. I strap myself in and don't meet his eyes.
The ride is quick and fun, just like how Jared had explained it would be, yet I don't enjoy it. There is something in the back of my mind, bothering me. I feel like I'm forgetting something.
"Are you okay?" Jared asks, walking in circles after we stop spinning and get off the cart.
"Yeah, sure, I think I'm just ready for a slow ride now, something calming to keep me from throwing up."
"How about the boats now?"
No, anything but the boats.
"Fine, if we each get our own separate ones." I run ahead of him and get in the boat line, praying he doesn't argue. "I want to drive my own. You can drive yours behind me, and we can meet up and get ice cream at the end."
I get in a green boat, number 7, without another remark, and Jared waits for number 10, a blue one. I strap myself in and get into the boat, free-floating in the waterway. They tried to make this one nice, planting flowers and exotic plants along the canal. I step on the gas and I speed away, going fast down the little way, passing carved statues and spouts of water that jet over my boat. I steer carefully away from the water and try to avoid some waves that splash up against the hull of my boat, but I get wet anyway and my shoes are filled with water. Jared is catching up behind me, laughing, and I speed up to try to get away from him. I need him to stay away, to avoid getting attached, I don't want to-
"Augusta! I'm coming!"
I step on the gas, the boat continues chugging, faster than his, and I make the loop and turn the corner before Jared sees me and I sprint to the coffee shop where my mom is.
"I think I'm going to be sick."
