Those six weeks passed, and not a day went by when I wasn't dreading the end of them. Being the analytical wonk that I am, I thought that Audrey would last precisely six weeks, no more, no less. I wanted her to live, but I wasn't about to kid myself.
It six weeks and four hours since Audrey had told me about the horrible infection, and I was sitting by her hospital bed, holding her hands. Elliot kept stroking her hair and whispering "It's okay." Tears were stinging my eyes and I let them fall down my cheek.
"Raz?" Audrey croaked, her voice weak and raspy, as though she had just learned how to speak.
"I'm right here." I said gently.
"Thanks...for everything."
I shook my head. "I didn't do shit."
Now it was her turn to shake her head. "You accepted me when no one else would." She winced. "The doctors were afraid something like this would happen...It hurts."
"I know, Auds, just...stay strong, okay, hang in."
I saw a tear rolling down her cheek as she whispered, "I can't."
I squeezed her hand. "It's okay..." I whispered. It was a sort of way to say that she could go, if it hurt her to stay.
"I'm sorry..." Audrey whispered. Her face contorted with pain, then her features relaxed, her bright green eyes lost in oblivion.
"Audrey, uh-uh, don't do this." I said, tears streaming sown my cheeks. "Don't do this to me." I caressed her face and planted a small kiss on her forehead. Elliot slid her eyelids down over her eyes, and crumbled into tears. I pulled down a pillow and laid on the floor beside the bed, not wanting to leave my best friend. I held her hand and whispered three words.
"I love you."
