I could hardly sleep during the long hours of the previous night. I had been plagued by the same nightmare about children with black eyes as I had for the last two months. Having woken up at three in the morning in a cold sweat, I took a shower and headed out early. It had still been dark, and I was reading in the park, waiting for the sign of the sun rising over the horizon.

Now it was 9:00, time for school to start. I was determined to stay awake to see the new girl, to see what made her so different, what had made Ms. Jacobson sound so nervous. In fact, the teacher was stealing glances at the door, gulping when it opened.

What I saw next was the most shocking thing I had ever seen. The girl who had just entered the classroom bore a massive, jagged slash crossing her face. It started right above her right eyebrow, slashed down across her face, catching almost every feature it it's dark red wake.

Her eyes were her most striking feature. One was light green, while the other was ivory. I'm not even joking. It was freaking IVORY. No colors, just ivory, white, if you may. It had the scar going through it, too, but it was a fine line.

It occurred to me that this was the first time I had ever seen anyone with actual facial deformities. I wasn't taking it too well, I guess; I was crying. I don't really know if I was crying for myself or the girl, but I was crying.

Val, the "nerd", was staring at the girl, one hand over her mouth, the other clenched into a fist. Tears were running down her face. She looked at me and moved her hand.

"Poor thing." She mouthed. I just nodded, I agreed with her.

"Mother of God." Ashton whispered. "What the fuck?"

This wasn't the first time I had heard him cuss, but it was the most shocking, as he was referring to the girl.

"Fricking..."

Ms. Jacobson sighed. "Class, this is Audrey." She said. "I pray you'll treat her like you'd treat any other student and be welcoming."

I noticed Audrey's bad eye didn't seem to blink. She must've been blind in that eye. I couldn't bear to look at her, so I opened my book and began to read.

"Go ahead and find a seat." Ms. Jacobson told her.

I heard a creak from the empty seat beside me. She had chosen the chair next to me.

Oh God.

When I was over at Ashton's house, he was in shock. "What the HELL was that?" He yelled.

"I...don't...know" I said, flustered.

"What do you think happened to her? Serial killer."

"Dunno."

I sighed. This girl was the most horrible thing I had seen in a long long time, and she had the seat next to mine.
