"Hello?"
The sound of your voice echoing through the suddenly empty halls at night made you shiver. This wasn't normal. On a typical day, you would be greeted by Mr. Lacitier greeting you whenever you get back from the Lucky Cat Cafe after a good day of work, and once in a while he would even cook up a good meal that you could smell right from the front door. But tonight, there was not a sign of movement. Not even a single whiff of something cooking in the kitchen. In fact, everything was deathly silent.
"Huh." You closed the door and slowly tiptoed inside, suddenly alert. Pretty much everything was untouched, which made you feel slightly calmed, but still alert. Thank god you already ate at the Hamadas, otherwise you would starve.
Slowly, you made your way to the kitchen, turning on the light. The pots and pans were still placed in their rightful places. You quickly got yourself some leftover fried chicken and heated it up, munching on it when it was done. Then you washed the dishes, headed up to your room, and started to work on your physics homework, the memories from earlier today rushing back to you.
Sean was back. Sean Tomaki, the guy whom you have never expected to see is now here again...the childhood friend whom you thought you would never see again...and even he understood of your relationship with Hiro, never questioned it much either. You were relieved. So much has passed over those 13 years, and yet nothing changed over that time...
Then of course, he had to ask Melanie out to prom.
You smiled at the memory. You were happy for them, really you were, and soon they would probably be begging their parents to sign the form that you forgot to take home. But why bother asking anyone to give permission for you to go to prom if the person who you were supposed to ask isn't here? Forget about dates right now, (Y/N). If something happened to Mr. Lacitier, then...forget prom. Forget everything.
You smiled as you finally finished your physics homework, and put that away, just about to take out your blueprint for your project to present for the SFIT showcase when your cell phone suddenly rang.
Almost immediately you picked up, desperate to hear Mr. Lacitier over the phone.
"Hello?"
"(Y/N)? Is everything okay?"
You were surprised to hear Honey Lemon's voice over the phone.
"Honey Lemon? What are you up to? And why are you calling me?"
"Oh, just um, checking on you," Honey Lemon said quickly. "Not in a creepy way, I hope."
You shook your head, smiling. "Nahh, everything's good, Honey Lemon. Just, Mr. Lacitier's not home. And I'm kinda getting worried."
"You mean...your guardian?"
You nodded. "I can't help but shake the feeling that he went...you know..."
"Don't worry," Honey Lemon assured you. "Maybe tonight he's kind of late because, you know, work and everything. I mean, I don't know much about (Y/L/N) tech, nor do I know—"
"Yeah, me neither," you interrupted her, standing up from your chair and pacing around. "But it's fishy. Normally he's earlier than me heading home."
"If that's normally the case, I'll have to agree," Honey Lemon said. "But you'll be okay, I hope?"
You shrugged. "I hope so. Anyway, thanks for checking in on me, Honey Lemon."
"No problem!" she chirped. "So, what are you up to?"
"I'm doing physics homework, and then I'm working on my project for SFIT," you told her, a smile creeping on your face again.
"Ooh! I remember Hiro telling us you wanted to get in!" Honey Lemon gushed. "I'm just going to say, you and Hiro are totally cute together! Surprising how much cuter you have gone over the last three years!"
"Oh come ON Honey Lemon!" you cried in protest, but you were blushing hard. "Is that all you ever talk about?"
"Oh maybe," Honey Lemon said lightly. "But trust me when I say that."
"Oh I do," you smiled, sinking back in your chair. Honey Lemon did have a point—over the years you and Hiro were so easy in your relationship you didn't mind the rest of the gang calling you the cutest couple in history. Because who knows, maybe among the few of you, you could be.
"And I heard from Melanie that Sean, your childhood friend, asked her to prom?" Honey Lemon continued.
"Honey Lemon, are you just going to play matchmaker between us for who knows how long it would be?" you teased.
"Well, she did tell me!" Honey Lemon cried. "We were there!"
"Right," you nodded, turning back to your blueprint. "Right. I don't really remember much, but well, I'm glad for her."
"And Sean's so sweet!" Honey Lemon gushed.
"Honey Lemon," you said again.
"What?"
"I gotta get back to work," you reminded her. "The SFIT showcase is only a few weeks away, and I better get something done. You know the invention is not going to complete itself."
Honey Lemon giggled. "Alright then, (Y/N). Hope everything goes well."
"Yeah, thanks. See ya later."
"Later then, (Y/N)."
The two of you hung up, and you got to work on your project again, working very well into the night. When at last you put your pencil down in satisfaction, you took a quick glance at the clock. 11:30 pm.
"And he's not back yet," you thought bitterly, getting up and turning off the light. But just as you walked out of the study, there came a knock on the door.
Suspicious again, you headed down the stairs and looked out of the peep hole on the door. To your surprise, no one was there. You opened the door a small crack, then fully wide open. Yep. No one was there.
"That's funny," you said to yourself as you took in the dark night sky ahead. That was, before you looked down and saw a neatly folded note on some card paper. Hesitantly you picked it up and unfolded it, your eyes narrowing and then widening when you read the message, written sloppily in black ink.
Your guardian is currently held captive in New Pyongyang in a secret laboratory, and the blame has, unfortunately, been placed on you. If you do not show up within the next 2 weeks, we will kill him. Make your decision wisely. Either it's goodbye to your guardian...or not.
"But who would..."
The question died immediately as your brain started to work again. Your calculus teacher warned you. And her prediction came true! You smacked your head hard. Why didn't you even bother warning Hiro about that? Now you were stuck with a pretty big dilemma that would either involve the death of the family you had left, or you would be hunted down as a criminal for your own guardian's capture for the rest of your life. The only person you could think of that could cause this kind of trouble...
Quickly, you dialed Hiro's number on your cell.
"Hello?"
"Hiro, you have to come over right now. I don't care what time it is. There's something you have to see."
