I clung to my rubber tube as waves thrashed me from side to side and thunder clapped through the sky. I felt like I was holding a lightning rod in my hand as we raced down stream.
We were spending the summer working at a youth camp, and we had Saturdays to do what ever we wanted. It had seemed like a gorgeous day when we had first woken up and came up with the plan. We wanted to borrow some of the camps nice rubber tubes and go fishing down a lazy river. We had grown up going to this camp and were very familiar with the river we were planning to go to. Everything was going great until a thunder storm appeared out of nowhere.
"Where did this storm come from?" I called out to the two others who were also on tubes floating down river with me.
"I'm not sure, we should probably get out of the water and wait it out." One of them shouted back.
We combed the shoreline for a safe looking spot to come ashore but the brush was to thick on either side. The current was picking up quickly and it was becoming difficult to paddle against it.
"We should only be about fifteen minutes from the boat launch." One of them shouted, as lightning struck through the sky.
We did our best to hold onto our fishing gear, and our fishing rods. It nearly seemed like a flash flood has caused the rivers water level to rise significantly. The waves were getting more and more aggressive the further we got down stream. We were laughing and shouting and trying to pretend we weren't worried.
"Try casting your lines out, I bet huge fish are active." My friend called out.
We laughed and cast our lines out into the current to float with us. We were starting to make our way towards a large bend in the river which was known for its choppy waters and sharp rocks. We floated for awhile, with no hints of a fish biting any of our hooks.
"We should reel them in and brace ourselves for this bend!" I called out. I waved frantically towards my friends and they reeled in their lines.
Before I could comprehend what was happening. My friend screamed and came racing past me.
"I have a monster on my line!?!" I could hear the shock in my friends voice. Lightning cracked like a whip and thunder roared through the forest.
He had hooked a large fish and it was quickly dragging him down stream. I watched as he struggled to paddled and reel in the fish, careful as to not tip over. His rod seemed like it was going to snap with how much it bent from the weight and strength of the fish.
"I got you!" I head my other friend shout out.
He had ditched his tube and was now sprinting through waist deep water to make his way to help bring the fish in.
"Are you seriously telling me it is only that deep right here?" I called out laughing hysterically.
"Yeah how silly is tha-." Before he got to our friend struggling with the fish, he vanished.
I panicked and frantically began to paddle while debating to also ditch my innertube to rescue him. The storm was picking up and the wind was beginning to swirl. Seconds felt like an eternity, my friend had still not surfaced.
I was about to dive in before my friend resurfaced with a loud boisterous laugh and a massive smile on his face.
"Check this out!" He yelled as he held up a two and a half foot long northern pike.
"It really was a monster!" My friend shouted as he took the hook out of its mouth and let my other friend reel in the line.
"We should eat it!" My friend who was still in his tube shout out.
The storm began to subside and we made it safely to the boat launch where we made our way out of the raging river. We had to walk back to our vehicle nearly five miles away, but it was a great experience and a really fun adventure.
We ended up not eating the fish and returned it safely back to its domain.
