before phoebe knew it, it was time for the fair she promised to attend.
"dang, phe. you clean up nicely," danny said once phoebe stepped out of her closet. she wore jean shorts with a weird cream tribal shirt that danny let her borrow. she also brought a navy rain jacket- just in case.
she rolled her eyes once she saw what danny was wearing. black leggings, a black crop top, and dark green jacket. she barely tried and looked a million times better than phoebe. "shut up."
"stop! i'm being honest."
"yeah yeah. this better be worth it. i had a long date planned with my books," phoebe sighed, looking out towards her window for effect.
"shut up."
"stop! im being honest," phoebe mocked, her lips curving up in a grin. danny shot her a scowl, rolling her eyes.
"anyways," danny mumbled. "i, for one, think you'll have a great time tonight." she crossed her arms over her chest, pushing her chin in the air.
"yeah, well i don't. i guess we'll just wait and see," phoebe said while pulling her jacket on. danny left the room first, walking down into her kitchen while phoebe followed.
"alrighty mom, we're heading out," danny called out, knowing her mother was probably on her phone for work.
her mother turned out to be in her office right next to where they stood, and when she waved danny nearly jumped out of her skin. she looked at phoebe with wide eyes, a hand on her chest, and panting.
"wow, alright. well, let's go then."
-
the moment phoebe stepped out of the car and saw light flickering and heard kids screaming with joy, she immediately regretted ever stepping in. the cool air hit her body with such force, she had to hold onto the car to steady herself.
phoebe shook her head. "why did i agree to this," she sighed, watching danny waddle over to her side with a toothy grin.
danny wrapped an arm around phoebe's shoulder, using her other arm to gesture to the scene in front of them. "c'mon phe. look around! this will be so much fun," danny practically squealed. "and it'll be good for you to get out," she said while jabbing an elbow into phoebe's side. the words she said seemed sarcastic, but the tone of her voice and the look in her eyes told phoebe that danny meant well.
phoebe sucked in a deep breath, letting the air back out just as danny yanked her forward. they began to cross a long field of grass, heading towards the large dock that all the attractions were sitting on. as they approached, a new feeling settled in her stomach. as her eyes took in the beautiful ocean behind the dock and the wondrous sky above that was beginning to turn pink, her mind told her this may just be okay.
danny made phoebe skip across the dirt path that lead to the dock, but phoebe actually didn't mind. danny's smile somehow widened, her mind thinking that she was bringing back the care-free girl she once knew. they made their way to the ticket booth and were met with a man who had pretty blond hair and nice blue eyes.
"two tickets please," danny asked, and phoebe turned to take her wallet out.
"fourteen dollars," the man said. as phoebe was still digging for her wallet, she heard the man say thank you. she furrowed her eyebrows and turned to danny. "dan, really?" phoebe groaned.
"i'm the one who forced you out here, so it's my treat," she grinned for the millionth time that night. danny turned on her heels and strutted towards the entryway.
phoebe placed her hand on the bridge of her nose, shaking her head before jogging to catch up with danny. "i'm paying you back," she mumbled.
there was a sign above that read 'welcome!' in cool squiggly letters and had ribbons streaming down. they both walked through and were immediately struck with a lot of activities to chose from. there was a concession stand (which phoebe immediately wanted to visit) to the right. also in that direction was some small booths, like the ones where you win stuffed animals or have creepy middle aged women tell you your future. to the left was some pretty sweet roller coasters, if phoebe was completely honest. there was one with three loops in a row, one in the back she saw with a huge drop that went over the ocean, one that dropped you straight down, even some swings that went super high up. phoebe couldn't help the smile that crept onto her lips.
