At Least You Tried (Gabi & Falco)

Gabi had many talents at the ripe old age of 13. She was a heck of a basketball player, she was pretty good at drawing, and she was always ready with a snappy comeback.

That last little talent of hers tended to get her in trouble.

It was February 8th, a chilly and gray Saturday morning, Gabi would normally be sleeping. However, she was up in the kitchen looking at her laptop and pulling out a wide variety of ingredients.

She was going to bake a cake from scratch. Normally she would just something store bought or use box mix. But this cake wasn't just for anyone.

It was her friend's birthday on the 10th and Valentine's soon after. Gabi wanted to Tom something special, because he was special to her. She grumbled at the thought of not being allowed to date until high school.

Gabi pulled out the heart shaped cake pan she got on Amazon, and began reading the directions.

"Oh no...please tell me you aren't trying to bake are you?"

Gabi turned around glaring at her cousin. "I can bake. How hard can it be?"

"According to Colt's mom it's an absolute science...and you're not that great at science"

Gabi stuck her tongue out at Reiner. "Why are you up anyways?"

"I got baseball practice" he said grabbing a granola bar from the pantry. "Just don't set the house on fire"

Gabi rolled her eyes and set to work. Wondering if she should call Zofia or Kaya to come help.

So maybe Reiner had been more right than she thought.

Gabi felt like a chicken with her head cut off. She should have pre-measured everything.

"What do you mean cream my butter??? It has cream it already!!" She shouted at her computer.

There were several phone calls made to Zofia and Kaya.

The kitchen a mess, dishes in the sink, and flour all over her sweatpants, she finally had the cake in the over.

Now to make the frosting. Kaya had sent her a simple buttercream frosting recipe that to quote "is too easy for you to mess up".

As the butter was mixing, Gabi's phone rang.

It was Falco. Her heart began thumping.

"Hi"

"Hey Gabi, what's up?"

"Uh nothing just doing some dishes" she lied.

"So I had a weird question"

"Yeah" Gabi was nearly breathless.

She looked to her frosting, and realized that she needed to add the sugar. She quickly glanced over grabbed the container and dumped some in.

"So you aren't allergic to anything are you like coconut or anything?"

"Um no...not that I know of"

"Ok good! Thanks see ya at school"

"Bye Falco!"

Gabi looked at the creamy white mixture. It looked like frosting. She added a bit more sugar.

"Stop laughing!!!" Gabi snapped.

Reiner and Connie couldn't stop laughing. They had come back from baseball practice just as Gabi took her cake out of the oven.

She wasn't sure if she put too much baking powder in the batter, or too much batter in the pan.
