"You're running out of time, guys." Jasper speaks through the intercom, "Raven's machine or Harper?"
"Don't give it to him! Uh!" The four on the inside of the room heard as Harper spoke, then heard as she groaned in pain as Jasper pulled her head back, whacking her in the face.
Artemis walked over to the intercom, "Just keep him talking." Monty says. She pressed and held the button, "Jasper, stop. There's no reason to hurt her." She spoke in a calm but loud voice.
"You can stop it, baby. Just open the door."
"If we do that, then what? We get chipped anyway? Jasper, you made me a promise. You swore you wouldn't take that damn chip, no matter how hard it got."
Jasper's voice was robotic, like Raven's once was, "Artemis, the chances of Raven reaching the kill switch again is less than 2%. I've added additional security. I know the digital signature of the chip that Hannah gave to Monty. The moment you use the portal to access anything within my code, i will know." Artemis knew she wasn't talking to Jasper anymore. "I will find you." Artemis looked back at Raven on the monitor, "Are you really gonna let your friend die for a 2% chance?"
All the two girls sitting in the communications room could hear was the sound of a gun shot, and a loud bang. Monty had went out the other door, and shot Jasper. Artemis told him to go for the back of the leg, preferably the knee, so she would be able to get the bullet out of him without trouble, or any additional scarring.
Artemis pressed the numbers into the keypad, unlocking the door and walking out, followed by Raven. As she looked down, Artemis saw her boyfriend laying on the ground, with a small pool of blood around him. This was her worst nightmare. "Good thing there's no pain in the City of Light."
Monty, Harper, and Raven tied Jasper up. They didn't expect Artemis to help them with this, they understood that she couldn't hurt him or put him in harms way. It was already hard enough to get her to agree to let Monty shoot him.
They sat Jasper down in a chair, his unconscious head weighing down on his neck. Artemis pushed his head back, so it was leaning against the back of the chair instead. Raven sat at the monitor, reading over the code. "I dont believe it." She says, questionably.
"What, did you find the kill switch?" Monty asked, walking over to her. "Don't answer that. ALIE can hear us." Harper moved forward.
"She's reading her code, Harper. Whatever it is, ALIE already knows." Artemis says, also moving to look at the monitor.
"So what is it? What are you talking about?"
"Clarke is in the City of Light." Once those words dropped from Raven's mouth, Artemis' stomach went with them.
"Wait, Clarke took the chip?" Harper questioned.
"She had to of, but--" Raven trailed off.
"What?"
"ALIE's running a flush subroutine to find her, sending Clarke's code out to everyone."
Artemis was so confused, "So.. she's basically treating her like a virus?"
"Not basically, exactly." Raven corrected her, "But, she wouldn't have to do that, if she could control her." She looked up at the screens, "It's like Clarke's running a different program."Monty looked back at Jasper, then leaned down, whispering, he asked, "Did she put the Flame in her head?" That was Artemis' immediate thought too.
"You don't need to whisper." They heard Jasper say, but they knew it wasn't Jasper. "I'm aware that Clarke has merged with the other AI. Thanks to her, my code is now updating to version 2 of my program."
"What happens when ALIE updates?" Artemis asked.
"She'll delete the kill switch. We wont be able to stop her."
Harper speaks in a low voice, like the rest of them, "So find the damn kill switch." Raven nods as she begins typing on the keyboard. They watch as her hands move from key to key.
There was one thing Artemis was truly scared of when it came to Jasper taking the chip, besides it being an AI, her biggest fear was that Jasper would forget who she is, and all of the incredible memories the two have made together. The butterfly garden, the art gallery, dancing in the rain, how Jasper made Artemis celebrate Christmas even though she was depressed, the way that they would sneak into the kitchen late at night. She was afraid that he wouldn't remember the beautiful life that they started.
Artemis swam in her pool of thought as she watched Raven program a door into the City of Light. The door was give Clarke direct access to the kill switch. "Come on, Clarke. Trust me." Raven pressed a few more keys, and the monitor wall began to beep, but stopped after a moment or so. "She did it. She's in."
The three standing behind Raven let out sighs of relief, Monty nodded, "Now it's up to Clarke."
They watched the screen, anticipating everything that was to happen next. They watched as people's codes dropped left and right, only their bodies dying.
Finally, they watched as the entire monitor, and every screen turned off. They stood there in silence for a moment, the dark of the room beaming off of their faces. Artemis turned the light on. "How will we know if she did it?"
"She did it." They all turned around as Jasper croaked his words. "Jasper." Artemis ran over to him, grabbing his face. "Is it really you?"
"I was finally at peace." With those words, Monty began to untie him. Artemis held his face, "Jasper,"
"Huh?" He asked, shaking through his tear covered face.
"ALIE was never easing your pain. She was overcoming it. And when you realize the difference between that, you'll understand why we had to do this. And i know this world fucking sucks. But at least it's real, at least you have me, Monty, Raven, Harper. We can get through this together."
"You really believe that?"
"Oh i know it. We will be happy again. I promise." Artemis leaned into Jasper lips as she finished her sentence, kissing him as a tear rolled down her face. She pulled away, and Jasper sniffled, "i'm sorry i stabbed you."
Artemis chuckled, "Hey, Monty shot you, so we're even."
"I didn't feel it."
Artemis, Monty, Raven and Harper laughed, and Jasper went to stand up. "Oh.. Woah."
"Easy, easy, easy." Artemis helped support Jasper's weight, "Mm!" Jasper grunted in pain, "Hold on." Artemis grabbed Jasper's other arm, pulling him into her. He hugged her, holding her waist as he rested his head on her shoulder, "i'm sorry, Artemis."
"Shh, it's okay. We're good, babe."
The two pulled away, but Jasper kept his arm around her shoulder for support, he turned to the others, sniffling again, "Could use a drink."
They all laughed, "Ha, ha, ha, yeah, we all could." Harper said, her eyebrows relaxing.
"Right after, i take that bullet out." Artemis says, grabbing a hold of Jasper, "Come on, lets go to med bay before you accidentally have a 'me' moment." The others didn't understand what she meant by that, but Jasper did.
She walked him down to the med bay, taking the bullet out and stitching it up. She had also cleaned his other wounds, making sure to kiss him every time she cleaned his lips.
