It was a quiet night like it typically was

It was a quiet night like it typically was. You had the same routine every night before bed. Tonight, you propped yourself up on your elbows while lying in your comfortable bed, rereading one of your favorite books.

Usually, you would finish reading a few chapters before bed, but there was something different about tonight— something in the air that you couldn't put your finger on.

Crickets chirped outside your slightly opened window as a telephone ring startled you. You jumped up, accidentally dropping your book. You cursed before picking up the receiver and placing it against your ear.

"Hello?" You whispered, quite confused. It was a late hour, and you didn't expect anyone to call you at the time.

A slight buzzing sound was the only thing you could hear before a cough erupted from the receiver. "H-hi. Uh- is this Y/n?" It was the voice of a boy around your age, you thought.

Confused, you responded. "Yeah, it's me. Why?"

Silence came from the phone. You pursed your lips as you waited patiently for the boy to speak again.

"Well- uh-" the voice was cut off by incoherent mumbles coming from the background. Furrowing your eyebrows, you debated whether you should hang up.

"Sorry! I think I have the wrong number!" A dial tone rang through your ear as you placed the receiver back. If it was the incorrect number, why would he know your name?

It was an odd interaction, yet you tried to ignore it. The phone rang again as you picked up where you left off on your book.

Curiously, you answered again, expecting the boy to speak again.

"Hello!" The boy said, causing you to grin amusingly.

"Hey, again."

"S-sorry that I hung up. It turns out it was the right number after all," he chuckled nervously.

You paused before looking outside the window and shutting it, closing the curtains. You can't be too careful. You picked up the receiver and held it against your ear once more.

"Why did you call me so late?"

The hesitation and anxiousness in his voice were evident due to the panicky breaths you could hear. "Well— do you like space? Like astronomy and stuff." He said cautiously as you couldn't help but giggle.

"I don't know much about it, so I can't say I don't," you responded, grinning like a child.

"Well, um. . . so if you look at a telescope, you could see the planet Jupiter right now," the boy spoke. "I'm calling everyone to tell them!" He said hesitantly, mumbling to himself.

"Hm. . . really?"

"Yeah."

Silence.

"Okay- well, I'm not calling everyone. I just wanted to talk to you, that's all."

Those words made your heart flutter in excitement. Someone wanted to talk to you— have a conversation and waste time with you. That had never happened before.

"Why me?" You questioned, unsure if it was a prank or not.

"Because. . . I think you're cool. And I wanted to. . . you know, hang out sometime."

Flustered, you rested your head on your headboard, the receiver clinging to your ear. "Well, space boy, I want to meet you in person. You seem pretty funny," you laughed.

"Space boy?"

"Well, you won't tell me your name, so I'll call you Space Boy."

Whispers came from the other side again as you patiently waited for the quiet bickering to end.

The boy spoke again. "Oh. I'm Finney Blake. You can call me Finn, though."

Finney sounded oddly familiar. After a few moments of thinking, you realize he was a boy that sat behind you in history.

"Oh! Finney!" You exclaimed happily. He was cute, you thought.

"Well, Space Boy, it's getting late. I'll talk to you in school tomorrow," you said.

"You're going to call me Space Boy instead of Finney, aren't you?" Finney replied, sounding more relaxed than when he first called you.

"You know it," you chuckled. "Night, Blake."

"Good night, Y/n."
