Chapter 8 | dream

Glimmering lights, busy streets, and a light chattering amongst people. It was livelier compared to the usual tense setting within the busy lanes of Japan. The people weren't just thinking about their work. People were happy, and all of them were, however, two little teenagers were beating that happiness. 

They were happier, no, they were the happiest. It was the 24th of December, in Korea, days before the actual Christmas celebration, yet, someone was already ready to give her a gift. There was laughter that could be heard from both of the teenagers. "Well, you're going back to Japan to visit your mother, right?" one said while riding the swing in the local park near their house.

It was almost 4 years since Y/N went to this country to live with her grandma. It was almost her 4th time celebrating Christmas with Kim Minji.

"Mhm," the other one - sitting calmly on the swing, not really swinging - couldn't reply properly because of the big scarf almost covering her whole face. The red scarf was almost double her size, yet she loved to wear it. The scarf wasn't meant for her, it was originally owned by her father but she insisted on wearing it. The other giggled because of this.

It has been years since they're become the closest to each other. Kim Minji has learned the art of communicating with the other quietly. She has learned how the other's mind work. She has learned to love everything about her. Her stillness, seriousness, kindness, and everything about her. She would admit that she's a bit sad that the Japanese girl wouldn't  be able to spend this incoming celebration with her. Though, she was old enough to understand that the other has to somehow spend time with her other family members too. Kim Minji wasn't a selfish person but she wonders sometimes how the girl beside her could make her the opposite. She wanted to be selfish and just spend each time with no other but her and her only.

"Then here you go, my gift in advance." The girl revealed a box that she has been keeping in secret.

The girl wrapped in a red scarf was in awe. Her eyes widened as she left the swing and hugged the latter in happiness.

She mumbled a small 'thank you' as the other one gave her another smile, this time with her eyes closed.

"Hehe, what else are you waiting for? You should open it already!" the latter excitedly said

The younger one looked at the box in her hold. Problem was, she was internally debating on what to do in return. She wasn't aware that Kim Minji would gift her in advance, she wasn't prepared. Deciding that it was improper to just be the one receiving a gift, she quickly removed her favorite scarf from herself and made her way to Minji then gently wrapped it around the latter's neck.

"Huh? What is this?" surprised by her action, she exclaimed.

"My tentative gift..." the younger replied while fiddling with her knitted sweater.

Understanding what the girl meant, Minji wasted no time and immediately stood up to hug the younger one. "Silly, you didn't have to! I could've waited for your gift. This gift isn't simply a Christmas gift, it's also my Birthday gift for you!" It was another chilly night but the hug and scarf provided her more than the warmth she needed.

The younger one not letting go of the hug replied, "But—"

Before she could even explain herself, the older one replied already. "Thank you for your gift! I'll make sure to treasure it, so open mine now!"

She didn't bother arguing with the persistent girl so she just did exactly what Minji told her.

Slowly opening the box, she was surprised to see a grey pair of headphones that she has been eyeing since September. She raised her head and flashed the biggest grin to the older one as she hugged her once again. "Thank you! I love this so much; I'll make sure to gift you properly next time"

"There's no need, you already gifted me your favorite scarf, that's more than enough" the latter replied as she pulled away from the hug making the other girl frowned.

"How about this? After you come back from Japan, we spend time and design my gift for you."

"But where's my gift for you there?"

"Silly of course it's your time, you spending time with me is the gift"

"Why? Do you dislike the idea? Do you want to do something else?"

"Huh?! No, of course, I would love to!"

"Then it's decided! Spend time with me when you go back"

I woke up to the noise of my own alarm clock. Unaware of a smile forming on my lips as I remember the dream I just had. It was the night before my birthday, the night I went back to Japan to spend time with my mom. Recalling everything, I still haven't returned my gift for her. She said that me hanging out with her was enough but through out the years, I felt nothing but the need to return her gift. I want to make her happy, just as happy as I was that night. No, actually, even happier. I want her to be the happiest this incoming Christmas.
