It had been an hour or two, August and Amelia were lying on the wooden floor with piles of paper and blunt pencils.
"I've never built a real plane, nothing that can fly more than a dozen meters, let alone carry two people"
"Well yeah, but you know enough about planes to build something that flies!"
"We need engines to fly! I don't know anything about engines!"
"We don't need an engine! what about the metal wings from your room?"
"Well I don't see much metal here, anyways they're for gliding not flying"
The sun was starting to set outside the window, a murder of crows was flying towards the orange sun.
"What about that drawing from your room... the coffin with the crows"
"Those were ravens, and they're too weak to carry anything heavier than a chair"
"What about bigger birds?"
"Vultures? You think tying a few vultures to a coffin and flying off into the desert is a good idea? They do make a good stew but they're vicious birds of prey, we can't tame them"
"No I'm talking about the owls, the desert owls here are as big as cats"
"Know a place where we can get a few dozen live owls by tomorrow night?"
"Maybe I do..."
"August! I'm serious, this isn't the time to joke around! If you ever want to get out of this town alive, we need to fly away"
"How can you be so sure? Did you ever try?"
"There are miles of nothing but desert that end at a canyon too wide and deep for anyone to just simply cross over"
"I'm serious about the owls"
August got up, brushed the dust of his pants, and walked towards the window, Amelia followed him. He peered out into the darkness and then pointed towards Mrs. Yellow's house.
"See? Over there... Her attic must be full of owls, where else do you think they go at night?
They both stood there watching her roof, tinted crimson under the moonlight; too scared to think about how silly their plan sounded, they knew that they were never escaping alive. They stood there shivering with excitement and fear as a few owls flew out of Mrs. Yellow's attic and into the darkness. Amelia slid her hand into August's.
"We can use your bed"
"What? Use my bed for what?"
She giggled; August's messy hair looked even more chaotic under the moonlight, his eyes were filled with fear and confusion, reflecting the moonlight back out the window.
"We can tie the owls to the bed and use that to fly"
"Oh! Yes! Yeah, that's a great idea! I was starting to think of where we can get a coffin haha"
