The Man Behind the Bar

"That damn bar tender better pay extra for this", I huffed as I traversed the cold, damp, and dark streets of the city. My week long mission was finally complete and it was time to collect the payment from the dealer.

The mission ended in success but not without some pesky hardships that weren't disclosed in the job description. Atop this, my target got a little handsy at one point which only added more incentive to execute him. The very thought of it sent a disgusted shiver down my spine as I approached the pub. I hated those sorts of men. Womanizers and other pigs who lay their unwanted hands on people.

The establishment was a nice pub adorned with polished wood and a relaxing atmosphere. Upon entry, sets of tables filled the area to the left, where to the right sat the bar. Behind it stood the person I was looking for; Kyutaro Kugi. The dealer who gives people like me work to complete for money. He uses this pub as a cover for his business, even so, he's an annoyingly good bar tender and has fooled all the customers so far.

He... was also my idiot brother.

The bell above the door sounded as I entered and alerted Kyu of my presence. "Y/N?"
I took a seat at one of the bar stools, dropping the duffle bag to the floor and rested my tired body atop the counter, looking up at the man. His sandy brown hair and square glasses that rested on the bridge of his nose framed his face nicely. His shirt and waist apron were well kept and he placed down the glass he had been polishing. To the normal eye, you'd never guess he was in a bad business and that this place was only to cover what really was going on.

"Hey, Kyu-chan", I smiled and his eyes turned genuine, unlike how they are when he works. He came out from behind the counter and gently pulled me into his chest. "You're early. How did it go?".

I pulled away. Mainly because we try to keep our relationship on the low in case we're being watched by an enemy. "I finished a day early, nothing crazy. I just wanted to end the creep's life a little sooner, that's all".

Kyu's eyes darkened a few shades as if he knew what I meant by 'creep'. "Tch, I knew giving you that mission was going to be a bad idea".

I smiled at my brother. He's a little over protective at times which can be annoying, but it's endearing nonetheless. I love him all the same but he's such a hypocrite. He always says to clients how dangerous and grim this line of work is, so having connections and ties to people never ends well. Yet here he is, caring for his little sister who he also gives missions to. "Hey it's all over now, no need to worry. Oh, and here. This is everything I collected from their database". I dug out a hard drive from my bag and slid it across the bench. In return, Kyu handed over a sealed envelope that was thick with cash. That's how things work with people like us. We come to Kyu for work, he gives us the details, then we get paid when the job is done.

"Will you help out here again now that you're back?" Kyu asked, stashing the goods in a draw behind the counter. On my days off I often spent time in this place helping him out with waiting tables and such.

"Sure! Anything to help out my doofus of a big brother. Although, since you don't pay me I want to look for some extra work. Maybe a part-time job at a fast food chain", I giggled to which Kyu just sighed. He suddenly looked lost in thought, as though he was contemplating whether to tell me something.

"What is it?" I asked.

He returned to polishing the glassware and put on a serious face. "Y/N, if you want.... There is a side job I was going to get someone else to do, it's only small but I am willing to pay if you'd like to take it".

This didn't sound like the usual kind of job situation, but I nodded for him to continue.

"I will need to write you up a file with the details, and as you know I can't explain anything here, but it's yours if you want it", Kyu explained.
