The following morning, Rei woke up to an eerily quiet house. There was no sound of Kazuki cooking in the kitchen or Miri making a racket around the living room. Then he remembered that Kazuki came into the bathroom earlier saying that he was going out, and that Rei had to watch Miri for a while. Thanks to the late hours of last night, Rei ended up falling back asleep. He searched around the apartment, but there was no sign of the little girl.... Kazuki was going to throw a fit.

Despite the little amount of sleep, I actually felt pretty good this morning. I woke up to Kazuki getting ready to go out somewhere, reminding me that I needed to leave as well. There were still reports to finish and my brother had asked me to work a few hours at the bar today, so I couldn't stay. Poor Kazuki looked so drained of energy and yet was still kind enough to walk me to the station. Miri tried so hard to come with us but Kazuki sternly told her no. As a thanks, I bought Kazuki a coffee for on his way to see my brother, he looked like he needed it.

Once my things for work were finished, I made my way back into town after a small nap and handed everything over to my brother in return for an envelope of cash. My last mission went perfectly and paid quite a lot this time.

"How long can you work for today?" he asked, placing my reports in a hidden draw behind the bar.

"A few hours maybe? I have to buy groceries and I might see if Rei and Kazuki need some more help with their work as well", I explained. Kyu-chan already knew about me helping them last night and he didn't mind, but I mentioned nothing of Miri.

"That should be fine, and speaking of those two, they were here earlier", he mentioned.

Both of them? I thought only Kazuki came here...

Kyu placed down the glass he was polishing, a sign that he was about to say something serious. "A kid showed up just before them, and they seemed to know Kazuki and Rei quite well".

Oh shit...

I kept a neutral face and place the cash into my little bag. "Yeah, about that, while they didn't have any jobs to do, they needed some easy money so they took on a few baby sitting jobs. Crazy, right? I guess they had another one today".

Kazuki told me to say this if ever Kyu-chan asked about Miri. It wasn't very believable but I had to go through with it. Mainly, I was just shocked that they managed to lose her in the first place. "I doubt she's causing them any trouble, so you don't have to worry. Besides, now that I'm with them they can start working again and ditch the babysitting".

My brother smirked. "I didn't say it was a 'she'".

"Huh?"

"Well, the only way you'd know about her is if you saw her at their house when you went to help them with their work, yes? But what would a stranger's child be doing at their house? And past 10pm might I add?"

Oh... shit......

I narrowed my eyes at him. This is what I meant by nothing ever stays secret with my brother, he always finds out. As an assassin, lying and putting on an act was one of my specialties, but lying to someone who has known you for a long time was a little more difficult. Before I could say anything he spoke first. "They dropped her off here earlier so they could carry out their job with no distractions", he said, gesturing to one of the booths behind me, and low and behold, the little brunette was fast asleep on one of the seats. I didn't even see her when I came in.
