I stretched and turned around, the bed half empty, I called him a few times but he didn't answer. I went to the living room, the bathroom and his office, all empty. He wasn't on the upper floor, so I walked down the stairs.
"Oh f*ck! Mort!", I found him, hanging from the railing of the gallery, a rope around his neck and a chair kicked over. I jumped down and picked him up, removing the rope around his neck, which already left dark purple bruises.
I called an ambulance, while placing his lifeless body on the floor, he was still breathing weakly, I squeezed his hand.
"Don't worry, everything will be alright.", looked at him and saw a tiny piece of paper in his pocket, I pulled it out and read the letter.
"Dear Alan, as you're the only one who cared for me,
I am sorry to leave you like this, but the voices in my head were too strong, they called me, I tried to fight them, but I lost, they pulled me into the darkness. It is better for both of us this way, you can live in peace, and I am with my family.
Goodbye my sweet boy,
Mortimer."
I couldn't hold back the tears, I hoped the doctors could save him. A few minutes later, the paramedics arrived and brought him to the hospital, they told me I could visit in an hour.
I went home, I hated this neighbourhood so much.
"I'm taking the keys for the car!", I called when I came home.
As I heard some voices I walked to the kitchen, meeting Karin's face.
"Oh hello, Alan."
"Fuck off."
"Alan! Be nice."
"Yes, show me some respect."
"You mean the same respect you showed Mort?"
"He is dangerous."
"Well, not anymore. Anyway I'm taking the keys, heading to the hospital."
"Why?", my mom asked surprised.
"Well, this morning I had the pleasure to find him hanging in his hallway after he killed himself, after some people decided to kidnap and slaughter all his doves."
"What?!", I could hear in moms voice she didn't know anything about it.
"Congrats, Karin. He's dead, he won't disturb you anymore, but I just hope you can never sleep again with the knowledge that you caused the death of 50 innocent animals and a man in his early twenties just because he didn't fit in your standards. Have a shit day.", I left I could her mom asking if it was true, but I just wanted to know if he survived right now.
30 minutes later I arrived in the hospital, asking for him. They told me to wait, and it felt like an eternity. Finally, they let me in, he was lying in a small room all alone, some monitors showing his heartbeat, and a bottle of some liquid hanging from a stand. His neck was covered in bruises, no makeup on his face, revealing a darker but still pale skin tone.
"Mort?", I closed the door, and he opened his eyes.
"Hi.", he whispered with a weak voice, opening his arms.
I hugged him and felt how he melted into my arms, hugging me tighter.
"How are you?", I sat on the edge of his bed.
"Could be better.", he smiled.
I petted his hand and smiled, too.
"You saved me."
