I let my hand hang down, relaxing from the writing today. Mort grabbed his books in front of his chest, but still keeping his straight posture, when I felt something cold slightly touching my fingers. I looked at him from the corner of my eye, his eyes on the street, his hand near mine, on his cheeks a slight blush. I just smiled, he noticed and gave me a shocked look before he turned his head back to the street.
A few minutes later, the same feeling on my hand, just more intense, locking our fingers. Without thinking I pulled my hand away and stuck it into my pocket, as soon as we reached our street.
"Ah, okay, I get it.", he hissed.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to......"
"Then why did you do it?"
"It's just.....what if the neighbours see us?"
"I thought you wouldn't care about your reputation?"
"I don't."
"Apparently you do. Are you scared to be seen with me?!", he opened his front door.
"No, I mean yes, but not in the way that you think."
"I don't want to hear it.", he slammed the door in my face.
I knocked a hundred times, before he opened again.
"I....."
"No.", he slammed it again.
"Give me one minute to explain.", he opened and started counting.
"Can I come in?"
"No, you're time is running out, speak or leave."
"Okay, listen."
"Listening."
"It's not that I don't want to be seen with you, I don't want to be obvious, and don't get any attraction, I want to protect you."
"I don't need protection. But you should learn to accept who you are first."
"Can we try again? Please."
"I'll think about it."
"Okay. See you tomorrow, I hope.", he just looked at me and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek.
But at home I should get the next bad surprise.
"Hi mom, I'm back."
"I'm in the kitchen, dear.", I followed the voices.
"Hello, Alan."
"Karin, what's up?"
"Not much, I just told your mom too, seems like there's something up in your life."
"Oh really?"
"She told me that you are hanging around the villa recently."
"Oh, she did. Wonder how that's her Business?"
"Oh Alan, my dear. I'm just caring about our neighbourhood."
"Are you seeing this McAdams kid?"
"I brought him his homework a few times because the teacher told me to, so yes, I've been to his house a few times."
"Is that the guy who you are dating?"
"We are NOT dating."
"Oh my god, my son is dating a psychopath."
"He's not a psychopath. He's actually quite nice."
"You should be careful with this guy, he's dangerous. You know what happened to his family.", Karin said with a fake caring voice."
"He didn't kill his family."
"How can you know?"
"I asked and he told me."
"Sure, that's what I would say if I was a murderer. Did you think about why he is the only one left, who didn't die in mysterious ways?", I couldn't answer, I was too stunned to speak. "Thought so. He is a danger to all people here. It's a miracle he didn't leave by now or got arrested."
"Is he a danger or does he simply not fit in?", I asked, tears in my eyes. I just didn't want to believe it.
"Be careful when you play with fire or you'll get burned, or in this case be careful when you play with knives or they'll be stuck in your heart faster than you can imagine."
"Okay.", I left. I didn't want to accept that he could be a murderer, but there was some truth in her words, why was he the only one who didn't die?
I went over to his house, knocking on his door.
"What happened to your family?", I pushed him inside.
"What?"
"Why are you the only one left? What happened to the others?"
"I don't know. I wish I would, but I don't."
"You can't just forget what happened!"
"But I did!"
"Did you kill them?!"
"No! I told you I never killed anyone!"
"That's what I would say too if I killed my entire family."
"I swear, I didn't kill them! Why would I lie to you?!"
"Because you're a psychopath!"
"I am not a bloody psychopath!"
"How can I be sure? You fucking tortured me! And licked my blood, what normal person would do that?
"Who said I'm normal?! Who gave you the goddamn right to judge me without knowing me? You come here and throw things in the room you can't even prove! You know nothing about me! Nothing! Leave."
"How can I believe you?"
"You can't, I can only tell you that I thought I could trust you. Do with that information what you want but leave my property."
"Okay.", I left even more confused.
I spend the whole night thinking who I should believe, a guy I knew two weeks or my moms best gossip friend. I didn't think Mort would hurt me seriously, but he had some weird hobbies.
But some weird habits don't make you a murderer. When I came out it wasn't much different, getting to hear words like 'you just haven't met the right girl', 'it's just a phase' or 'you should send him to therapy', if you were different here or just didn't fit in you are fucked. I know some here are still not happy with me being gay, but they have to live with it, like I have to live with the fact I have to give a detailed cv of all my possible partners. But this time I decided not to, and just got in trouble, the same trouble I would be in if I said I'm dating the freak from across the street.
