Negative Sentences & Czy? & Review Sentences

In this chapter, we will cover some essential Polish phrases for beginners, in 3 sections. Section 1 - Negative sentences, Section 2 - Questioning and Section 3 - Some Practice Sentences to help you ace Polish! Let's begin!

Section 1: Affirmative and Negative Sentences In Polish, making a sentence negative is as simple as adding "nie" before the verb. Here are some examples:

Affirmative: Ja lubię kawę. (I like coffee.) 

Negative: Ja nie lubię kawy. (I don't like coffee.)

Affirmative: Ona mówi po polsku. (She speaks Polish.) 

Negative: Ona nie mówi po polsku. (She doesn't speak Polish.)

Now, try making these sentences negative:

Ja rozumiem = (I understand)

Ty lubisz lody = (You like ice cream)

Oni jedzą mięso = (They eat meat)

My lubimy jeździć na rowerze = (They like to ride on the bike)

Section 2: Asking Questions To ask a question in Polish, simply add "Czy" at the beginning of the sentence and "?" at the end. Here's an example:

Statement: On lubi pizzę. (He likes pizza.) 

Question: Czy on lubi pizzę? (Does he like pizza?)

Now, try making these statements into questions:

Ty mieszkasz w Warszawie = (You live in Warsaw)

Ona pije herbatę = (She drinks tea)

My lubimy polskie filmy = (We like Polish films)

Oni znają angielski język = (They know the English language)

Section 3: Practice Sentences To wrap up our beginner's guide to simple Polish phrases, here are some practice sentences for you to try:

Dzień dobry, jak się masz? = Good morning, how are you?

Czy możesz mi pomóc? = Can you help me?

Proszę o kawę, ale bez cukru = Please a coffee, but without sugar.

Przepraszam, gdzie jest toaleta? = Excuse me, where is the toilet?

Miło mi cię poznać = Nice to meet you

Do zobaczenia później = See you later.
