In the year of 2270, 500 war orphans boarded the USS Republic from San Francisco, California headed for either Star Base 10 or 12 and one of the young girls was Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell.
Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell was 15 years old when she left Post World War Three Planet Earth with the other 499 young people who were between the ages of 11 and 17 years old.
Captain Janeway told them that their voyage would take four and half years to reach their destination and there would be a stopover at Talos IV where they would board some other passengers before they headed for Star Base 10 and 12.
In the year of 2270, The United Federation of Planets fashioned a program named "Operation Adam and Eve " with the hope that the young people would start to recreate with each other while on board the USS Republic.
With the hope none of the new children would be born with the long side effects of radiation sickness, but no children were born to them as they headed for Star Base 10 and 12.
It was 2272, when The USS Republic orbited around Talos IV and they beamed up only one passenger and his name was Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley.
Lt Kevin Thomas Riley had lost his entire family on Talos IV under the hand of the fugitive governor , Kudos and his daughter who had fled the scene after the brutal executions of over 4000 people under an alias name.
One day Lt Kevin Thomas Riley walked into the garden on board the USS Republic and he didn't see Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell sitting in the garden until he turned around and saw 17 year old Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell sitting in the garden.
Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley turns around and he sees Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell sitting in the garden reading and he says " Beg your pardon."
Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell turns around and she answers " Beg your pardon for what Sir?"
"For intruding on your privacy." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley tells her.
"You did not intrude on my privacy Sir. " Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell tells him " I come here everyday to get away from everyone."
"So did I. I have just come from Talos IV. I lost my entire family by the hands of Kudos, who was the governor of Talos IV." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley states.
"I am sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my entire family on Planet Earth due to the long term side effects from radiation sickness." Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell explains.
"One by one they all died in front of me." Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell explains, "The doctors said that those of us who were unaffected were the lucky ones, but how so?"
Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley looks dumbfounded and he tells Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell "Well your friends and you weren't affected and you are free from any long term side effects of radiation sickness."
"This makes us lucky when it claims most if not all of our family." Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell asks.
"None of our families wanted us because they couldn't feed us and on Planet Earth they were rationing food only to immediate families and not to their extended family members, so we were placed on this starship like cattle." Karissa explains.
"None of us know anything about Star Base 10 or 12." Karissa explains.
"I don't know much about Star Base 10, but it is one of many Star Bases created by The United Federation of Planets to sustain human life." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley explains, " Star Base 12 is the same way but it has a different social status."
"Social Status?" Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell asks.
"Social Status on Star Base 12 is based on the Aristocracy founded back in 2165." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley explains.
"The Aristocracy, Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley." Karissa asks.
"Yes, Miss Lowell. The Aristocracy." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley tells her " The second set of settlers came from Europe in 2153 prior to the beginning of World War Three Planet Earth."
"There were 500 of them that came from Europe on board the USS Excalibur and they were led by Lord Patrick William Howard." Lt Kevin Thomas Riley states.
"In fact his great-grandson is Duke of Norfolk Territory and two of his great-great-great-grandsons are the Dukes of Bedford and Northumberland Territory." Lt Kevin Thomas Riley explains.
"Two of his great-great-granddaughters are married into the Aristocracy on Star Base 10." Lt Kevin Thomas Riley explains.
"What is wrong with the women on Star Base 12?" Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell asks
"I really don't know, I haven't been for sometime, Miss. Lowell, but from what I heard is that none of Lord Patrick William Howard male descendants have had any children. I mean his great-great-grandsons and great-great-great-grandsons." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley explains.
"Don't you think they are too old to believe in the stork theory, Kevin Thomas Riley." Karissa asks.
"No damn stork is going to drop a baby down their damn chimney." Karissa explains, "If they want children they better start to copulate or for a better term "Fuck" with each other."
"Or are the damn men infertile and shooting blanks." Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell asks.
"Or is it "not tonight honey. I have a headache." Karissa asks Kevin Thomas Riley.
"I guess the men on Star Base 12 think they are asexual and can reproduce themselves. Well, good luck to them." Karissa tells Kevin Thomas Riley.
"Star-Fleet Medical Officers can't find any good reason for their men to not have any children. The men have been tested and they are fertile." Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley explains " And so are the women."
"That explains all the medical reasons." Karissa tells Lt Kevin Thomas Riley.
"What about the chemistry between them and if there is none. Nothing will happen." Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell tells him.
"If there is no romance, passion, and fire. The fire will not ignite and they keep trying and trying and they will get no children at all." Karissa Elizabeth Ann explains.
"I do believe that the men are too old to believe that they will find their princess and the women are too old to believe in fairy tales that their prince charming will come riding on a white horse to carry them away to never-never- land." Karissa explains.
"Or all these men looking for fresh blood to pump into the old families?" Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell asks.
Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley looks at Karissa Elizabeth Ann Lowell and he has no answer and their conversation ends with silence.
