Shoupe returned at around eight pm, jus after JJ realized he was spending another night in a prison cell.
"There's still a way out of this." The Sheriff reminded him. "I won't force you, but there's always an out. It's completely up to you."
"God, you don't fucking get it." JJ grumbled, leaning against the brick wall. He didn't dare look at Shoupe as he spoke. "I confirm your stupid ass suspicion, my dad will come after me and you, and then we'll both be fucked."
Shoupe didn't tell him he basically confessed right there. He still had no evidence.
"You really think your father is stronger than the police?" It was a genuine question, with too much concern behind it.
JJ kept quiet after that. It sounded too much like pity.
"JJ, Kiara might not be coming back for while. You have two options; you can spend your days here for about two years-"
"Two fucking years?!" JJ exclaimed, finally meeting the man's eyes.
"Or until Kiara gets out of the California School for Troubled Women. Your other option is to tell us what's really going on. We aren't stupid, son, your father is no regular man."
"I'm not your fucking son." JJ was stubborn, but only because the teary feeling in the back of his throat wouldn't go away. "No reason why I can't just go back to my real dad."
"You wouldn't do that." Shoupe sighed. "You may be stubborn as hell, but you aren't stupid enough to go back there. Not with the bail money you'll need from
him, the amount of time you'd spent away from him despite direct orders, and the the split on your lip on its own."
JJ recoiled at the way he spoke. He had it all figured out. "Shut up."
Shoupe chuckled. "Don't be mad at me, son."
"Call me son one more fucking time." JJ growled back.
The Sheriff took his cue, standing with a grunt and walking back toward his desk. The younger boy hated how right he was. He would have to choose.
"Shoupe!" He called not even four seconds later.
The man turned just enough to see JJ's lip quivering.
"Come back... please."

She would stare at the rubbing alcohol, standing in its designated place on her nightstand just in case JJ came back with more cuts for her to clean.
She stared at the bandages under her bed, two and three packs of cotton, waiting, begging to be used again. It had barely been twenty four hours, and her life had already gone to shit without him.
She paced her room floor, refusing to show emotion. She was more like him than ever. Refusing to cry, hating the vulnerability and wanting of it all, even blaming herself for the whole situation.
Could she have tried harder to stay? Could she have convinced them she wasn't some 'troubled teen?' Could she have been a better daughter... to where they wouldn't have thought about this drastic solution in the first place?
And then there were tears streaming down her own face, and she hated them too. They were tears of betrayal. She wasn't sad, not yet, she was only angry.
Now, as she's spent the day alone in her room, she's figured she's made her own prison in protest. And she'd stay there as long as she could.
She wouldn't realize she'd mirrors JJ in every possible way. Despite her opposition to being anyone but herself, she had to know at some point, that being like him made her feel close to him.
Even if it meant she had to find a gun with no safety on.
And who but Pope was calling her straight after that thought.
probably to mediate she thought, giggling darkly.
"Hello." She said softly. "Pope, I have a lot to say."
"Me first, Kie." Kiara choked. Why did he sound just like JJ? "You missed Sarah's meeting. She doesn't know anything."
She snapped back into reality. "Nothing at all?"
"Literally nothing. John B wanted to fill her in, I told him we shouldn't. But then he said we weren't supposed to know either so one more person couldn't hurt. He told her without consent!"
"Welcome to my life." Kiara rubbed her forehead as she spoke. "She's not doing anything drastic, is she?"
Pope looked to the right at the blonde disaster in John B's arms. Silent cries were just about expected.
"Reeling, currently." He deadpanned, and Kiara sighed.
"Nothing we can do." She said, and her voice was chilling. She didn't sound like herself in any way, shape, or form. "Can I tell you now?"
"Go ahead." Pope didn't even question it.
So she just said it. "I'm leaving tomorrow."
As if on cue, lighting flashed through her windows, allowing a loud thunder to boom behind her words.
Pope listened to rain on her side of the phone for a good minute before asking an obvious question. "Where?"
"California. My parents think I'm a troubled teen. JJ knows more about it, if he makes it out of prison, ask him."
Pope shook his head. "Kie, why didn't you tell us??"
"Why didn't JJ tell you he was getting kicked at home?" She bit back. "Because it's humiliating, and there's nothing we can do about it!"
With that, she hung up, leaving Pope and an eavesdropping John B confused and hurt. Even Sarah's cries had been reduced to sniffles at her hopeless words.
