a couple weeks later

i was sitting on my bed reading a book when my phone started vibrating. i looked at it and saw that lana was facetiming me. huh, weird. usually when we facetime it's a group facetime with melanie.

i accepted it and when i saw lana, i was slightly taken aback. she was in hysterics and her mascara was streaming down her face.

"whoa, lana, are you okay? what's wrong?" i immediately asked her. she took a few shaky breaths before speaking.

"mel- melanie and josh are dating." she cried. i looked at her, confused.

"that's great, isn't it? mels finally got a boyfriend. why are you crying?" i asked her.

"it- it is great and all but..." she choked on her words, fresh tears running down her face. "i don't know how to explain it. you won't un- understand."

"do you like josh or something?"

"are you being for real? i don't even really know him. and, he's kind of a douche bag anyways." lana seemed offended. she then whispered. "he's not even good enough for her. i'm good enough for her. jesus, why does god hate me?"

and then, it hit me.

all the times lana and melanie were together. holding hands and always seeming to be the closest out of the three of us. i always thought it was because there was always a duo in a trio. but, it was more.

"you like melanie." i realized. lana only seemed to sob harder.

"i don't like her. i love her, y/n. i'm in love with our childhood best friend. i always have been." she cried. i nodded, understandingly.

"it's okay, lana, i'm here for you. have you ever thought that maybe she feels the same way? i see how you two are together, it might not be one sided."

"but she's with josh. she doesn't love me. if she did, she wouldn't be with him, y/n."

"maybe she's scared. maybe she's with him to hide her feelings for you, lana. you have to talk to her, babes. just call her or have her come over. it's never too late."

"i just-"

"lana." i interrupted my overthinking best friend. "aren't you the one who's always telling me to put myself out there? now it's your turn. if she doesn't feel the same way, at least you can let yourself recover and move on. but, i have very high hopes that she feels the same way. i've barely even heard her talk to us about josh."

there was a few moments of silence before lana let out a small sigh.

"i'm gonna ask her to come over. then, i'm gonna tell her." lana decided. i smiled, widely.

"there you go! i'm sure it's all gonna work out." i told her.

"god, i really hope so. i'm gonna let you go so i can text her and see if she can come over." she replied. i nodded.

"okay, good luck. i love you, girl."

"i love you too, y/n. thank you."

"of course."

lana hung up and i set my phone down, going back to my book. i really hoped that it worked out for my two best friends. the two of them together would actually be so great.

about a half hour later, i heard tapping on my window. i jumped, almost throwing my book across the room. who the hell was tapping on my window? especially considering my room was on the second story.

i walked up to my window and opened the curtains to see awsten standing on a tree branch. confused and a little shook, i opened the window. now how in the hell did he get up there?
