"THE TIME IS NOW!"

Alex threw her head back and laughed at JJ's proclamation. "At least let me learn on a real board."

He shook his head fast, damp strands of hair flopping onto his forehead. "This is a real board." He motioned to the strapped-together bundle of driftwood and tree bark that had been pulled together to slightly resemble a surfboard.

"Can that thing even get wet?" She screwed up her nose at it.

"Yes, wood can get wet, Alex." JJ gave her a look. "Now, come on, you gotta learn how to surf before the surf trip."

"Oh, that's still happening?"

He grinned. "It's already begun, baby."

No matter how how she tried, she couldn't fight the smile from overtaking her face.

They had been on the island for about a week now ━ time wasn't really something they were keeping track of, but she was pretty sure she had gone to sleep around five or six times ━ and life couldn't be better.

There was no school, no responsibilities, nothing to worry about. No more shady parents or dangerous treasure hunting schemes.

They caught fish and found fruits to eat, built shelters and beds out of wide leaves branches. They drank from coconuts and layed out in the warm sand, surfing on makeshift boards during any free moment they could.
